We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tink/Sam Rainbow/Falzone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tink/Sam, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Both Sam and I were teachers prior to starting this business. We walked away from benefits, a pension, and the security of a salary. We invested all of our time and money in this and wouldn’t be where we are if we didn’t. Sometimes you just need to jump! We are the kind of people that go all-in; in our eyes there is no other way. Neither of us came from money or financial security, but it’s what we both so badly wanted that for ourselves. We decided to leave teaching and go all-in together. Prior to Sam joining this, I (Tink) worked part time as a Professional Organizer and started a small company, Clean House. It took off pretty quickly and I asked Sam to join me. She started coming to jobs occasionally, and before we knew it, we were doing all jobs together; even calling out of our teaching jobs to do organizational jobs together. It got to the point that we had a wait list of three months and Sam said, we do this together or I start my own company. We decided to be partners and rebranded everything. In two years, we went from just us to six employees and we are just beginning!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I (Tink) got into the industry as a “hobby”. My wife pointed out one day how I was always complaining about my teaching job… I didn’t even realize I was doing that! She said “you should do something you love and are passionate about”. I said “like what?! Clean or organize for a living”. She said “exactly!” I had no idea it could be a career. She created my website and reached out to her friends to see if anyone needed help organizing. Sure enough, there was a great response. After my first job, they told their friends, and then they told their friends, and before I knew it, I had a list of growing clients.
When Sam joined me, she and I just taught ourselves as we went. We both have an eye for design and understand the importance of living an organized life. We’ve seen how it drastically impacts one’s quality of life, to feel supported by their homes, so it quickly lit us up and we couldn’t get enough.
We were asked to do multiple segments on local news stations, were interviewed for podcast, had networks reaching out about potential TV shows, and grew a decent following on social media.
I think we would both say that we are most proud of taking the leap and changing the trajectory of our lives, and our family’s lives. We no longer financially struggle and we are learning how to grow a business and perfect our craft along the way. We stand out from other organizers because we ARE so different. We like to say we marry decor and organization in a way that creates flow and function. We basically do room makeovers in a day.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Life is too short to live a mediocre life! After I had my second child, in a marriage that was “perfect” I began noticing a void in my life. I kept checking off the boxes of what I thought I dreamed my life would be, but kept feeling further and further from my true self. Something just wasn’t right. I was living for other people, and not listening to my inner needs. In the same year I left my husband for a woman, I began a new business. Now, I am married to her and have a thriving business. Life is all about checking in with yourself and learning to pivot when necessary, because if you don’t, before you know it, you’re stuck in a marriage and career for 20 years that strips you away from your authentic self and needs.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Sam and I met as Rodan and Fields team members, haha! She was on my team and lived in Hawaii at the time. We would talk often for business but learned how much we enjoyed each other’s company when we would connect. Initially, when I started Clean House, I just thought I needed a little help and company when I worked, it turned out, the business was growing too quickly to keep up and in order to take this where I wanted to go, I had to trust that partnering with Sam was a risk I was willing to take. She was pretty assertive because she knew how well we worked together and knew that what we created as a team, was far better than what either of us could produce individually. She gave me an ultimatum and I had the choice to go into a 50/50 partnership, or lose her all together; I am so thankful that I chose to take the leap with her. She has taught me so much about taking risks, partnership, and myself through the process.
