We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tina Winslow a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
There is a unique challenge in this industry because we are always working to find the talented resources in people while working towards what the end goal is for our clients in a way that is mutually beneficial to both parties. The balance of keeping quality people while maintaining profitability can be challenging.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a 52-year-old, third generation entrepreneur. I have a passion for helping people and that has blended into another passion I have which is marketing strategy.
I have had a fascination with marketing that goes back even into my youth where I would collect ads that spoke to me. I followed that trail into my education and received a degree from Texas Tech University that was a double degree in English and Advertising. The internet had just started back then and it was an amazing place to be as the digital world took off and brought Marketing with it. I started my first company in 2000 which has led to this company that I founded in 2013 named Art of Strategy Consulting.
Art of Strategy Consulting offers companies and professional service providers comprehensive marketing strategy, search engine marketing and content solutions that delivers a complete package of services to reach the unique results each client desires.
The heart of what we deliver is a solid marketing strategy that maps out the next best right move to achieve the desired client results. Many companies skip forward and start with the tactics before looking at the full picture. We work with our clients to help them start with a solid strategic plan that ensures maximum growth.
I’m most proud when I see the growth our clients have achieved through work we have done.
We are different. We think differently and produce results that are different. It’s important to us we work with companies that get strategic thought and want to grow as we grow. And vice versa.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
In entrepreneurship there are many, many lessons I have had to unlearn. The most recent was that I needed to pivot in pricing because project work was no longer working for the type of clients we need and want. We had to move to a retainer-base model to make sure all project work is being accounted for. It was a major shift in how we thought as a business and how I priced things in general. The lesson for me was that what worked before may not always work going forward.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
There have been several books recently that I recommend for entrepreneurs. I know personally that Traction, by Gino Wickman and Traffic Secrets by Russell Brunson. Both of them have great information on getting your thinking in order as a small business owner.
