We recently connected with Tina Wilmhoff and have shared our conversation below.
Tina, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client?
Running a service-based business, my whole world often revolves around my clients’ organizing journeys. I tend to get hyper-focused on making sure their needs are met, and sometimes, well, I forget to put my own needs first.
Luckily, my clients are incredibly supportive and think of me just as much as I think of them.
I recently had a client who really drove this point home. I had just moved this incredibly awkward playroom set by myself. When she asked me to move it, she had no idea how heavy or tricky it would be to carry. It looked lightweight, but it was surprisingly deceiving, especially transporting it down multiple flights of stairs to the basement!
The following week, when she was donating it, she helped me load it into my van, and it made such a difference.
It was a great reminder to ask for help when I need it and remember to think about my own health and safety.
Tina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Like so many others, I lost my job during the pandemic. The corporate travel world was never the same after video conferencing became the norm, and I knew it was time for a change.
So, I decided to pivot into something that had been a lifelong passion—I just hadn’t realized it! I’d always had a natural knack for organizing, but I wasn’t sure how to turn it into a business. I reached out to experienced coaches in the industry, honed my skills, gained new ones, and four years ago, I launched my own business. I haven’t looked back since!
My initial inspiration came years before, when I helped my parents downsize. Witnessing their transformation—from being weighed down by their belongings to feeling free and ready to start a new chapter—was truly profound. It showed me the incredible power of organization, and that’s the feeling I strive to bring to every client.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
My dad was a true “keeper of things,” always holding onto items he thought he might need someday.
I definitely followed in his footsteps, accumulating my own share for the very same reason. Giving myself permission to finally let those things go has been an incredibly freeing journey for me and my family.
After he passed away, I found myself holding onto even more, still thinking I’d find a use for them later.
But I eventually realized I was just keeping them because they were his.
Deciding to let go of those items and find new homes where others could truly appreciate and use them has become a driving force behind my business.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I’m a big believer in genuine connections within the community. I actually co-run several networking groups, and the relationships I’ve built there have become the cornerstone of my business.
What I love most is that there’s no pressure to refer just because you’re in the group. This freedom has been incredibly liberating for me and for others.
By taking the time to truly cultivate these relationships, I now receive daily referrals simply because of those strong connections.
