We were lucky to catch up with Tina Wiggins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tina, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I grew up watching my mom who is a self-taught artist. While at college I studied art and more or less learned the basics, however I did not finish my degree. If I would have stayed and taken all necessary courses it would have sped up my growth. So I learned everything after the basics on my own. Skills that were most essential as an artist would be patience, always keep practicing, and pushing myself outside my comfort zone. The obstacles that stood in my way was myself. I always doubted my abilities. Sometimes I still do but just take the leap and go for it. That’s how you grow as an artist.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a 51 year old stay at home mom / full-time artist. I’ve been married for 21 years and we have one angel in Heaven and our son. We live in Texas.
I believe what sets me apart from other artists is my range of art style. There are commissioned portraits, oil paintings, acrylic, fluid art, and abstract art. Redundancy bores me and is why I push myself to try different styles of art. This way there is something for everyone to enjoy.
When I am commissioned to sketch or paint it is imperative that I take my time and not rush. Details are everything to me. Especially when the person or animal has passed on. I take the time to look and study the images they give me in order to provide the best quality art. I work from photographs purposely to connect with my muse. Art is my passion.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part to me is that I actually love what I do. Everyday I am genuinely excited to work on art. If I start a new piece the excitement of it will wake me in the night. Putting so many hours, days, sweat and sometimes tears of frustration, because something looks off is all worth it in the end. When you deliver the art and see their reactions and how happy they are, it’s truly priceless. It fills my heart and soul with joy and that is when I know that I am doing exactly what I was meant to do…Art!
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My ultimate goal with this journey through the art world is to have my first solo exhibit and to be featured in local art galleries.
