We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tina Vidal-Duart. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tina below.
Alright, Tina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents set me up to be very independent. They did not solve my problems for me. They allowed me to solve my own problems and were there to help guide me through the process, but most importantly, they taught me how to find solutions when problems arose. I’ve found that so beneficial throughout my career, being able to think outside of the box and problem solve. Now, owning my own company, I have so many employees bring me problems without first thinking about solutions and how to solve the problems on their own. It has amazed me how so many people don’t have the ability to think and problem solve, especially in the younger generation and with the change of school curriculums of teaching to test not teaching to think and problem solve.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into my career by accident. I wanted to be an international lawyer and was working on my master’s in international business and then was going to go to law school. During that time, I received an opportunity to work for a start up in healthcare doing turnarounds of financially distressed hospitals in rural areas. I thought it was a good opportunity and the right time in my life to take risk. It proved to be a good decision and I become CEO of a hospital by the time I was 25. Also, by that time, I realized I would have hated being a lawyer!
I worked on healthcare turnarounds for about 12 years and focused on some turnarounds in some other industries as well. Eventually I wanted a change and received an opportunity to do corporate restructuring work with an Engineering and Emergency Management Company. I now own that company along with my husband and we provide engineering, emergency management, and disaster related healthcare services to local, state and government entities. I mainly focus on our healthcare division that was created during COVID and now provides healthcare solutions to government agencies.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I don’t love the healthcare industry, but I love helping people. It wasn’t what I originally thought I would do in my life, but it has led me down an incredible path that I would not change for the world. It has given me the opportunity to help millions of people including save the life of my own husband during COVID. I believe God has a plan that sometimes is better than we could have imagined for ourselves.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In business you constantly have to pivot in order to be successful. You can never be so in love with an idea or strategy that you can’t change when change is required. I saw that first hand during COVID. Our firm was activated to help the State respond as a result of our emergency management contracts, but they had so many needs in the healthcare space. I knew I had the contacts, connections and skill set to be able to assist so we shifted our business quickly to be able to respond. As a result of that pivot we were able to test, vaccinate or treat over 7 million people in the State of Florida.
