We were lucky to catch up with Tina Marie Fowler recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tina Marie, appreciate you joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
The journey of Thrift Stories Boutique is a testament to the power of faith and perseverance. As a nonprofit leader, I’ve always been passionate about helping others, but I had a deep desire for something of my own. I prayed for something that would allow me to continue serving others while also building a business that would support my nonprofit work. Little did I know, the answer was already on its way.
As Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” I had plans, but God’s plan was far greater. One night, I had a dream that I was going to open a thrift store, and it wasn’t just any thrift store – I woke up with a sense of purpose and clarity, knowing that it was time for it to happen!
You could say that Thrift Stories Boutique is a dream come true. Over 20 years ago, I owned a thrift store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and it was always my goal to reopen the store here in Phoenix. After living here for almost 20 years, it finally came full circle. The minute I knew I needed a building, God connected the dots so quickly that I knew it was not of my own doing, but there was a higher power at work. The building I had been praying for, in the location I had been asking for, became available, and it was like the universe aligned just for me. I knew it was meant to be.
Securing the building was just the beginning. The next challenge was securing inventory and figuring out the logistics of opening a retail space. I had to navigate sales tax, licenses, and all the other necessary steps, but I knew it was worth it.
I spent countless hours scouring estate sales, thrift stores, and online marketplaces to find unique and meaningful items. It was a lot of legwork, long nights, and hard work, but I was determined to create a space that would feel like a treasure trove for my customers.
As I collected items, I realized that it wasn’t just about filling shelves – it was about curating a story. Every item has a history, a memory, and a significance that I wanted to honor. I envisioned a space where customers could come, browse, and connect with the stories behind each piece.
Bringing Thrift Stories Boutique to life was a process. I had to figure out how to merchandise the store, how to create a flow that would make customers feel comfortable and inspired. I wanted it to feel like a cozy living room, where people could come, relax, and find something special.
I envisioned a community hub, a space where people could gather, share stories, and connect with one another. I added cozy nooks, vintage decor, and warm lighting to create an inviting atmosphere. I wanted customers to feel like they were part of something special, something that went beyond just shopping.
Thrift Stories Boutique is more than just a thrift store – it’s a space where people connect, share stories, and find purpose. It’s a reminder that even when we think we have it all figured out, God’s plan is always greater. I’m grateful for the journey, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.
Thrift Stories Boutique is located at 925 E. Indian School Rd, Phoenix, AZ, and we’re proud to be part of the vibrant community of local, independently-owned businesses in Central Phoenix.

We’re not just selling clothes or furniture; we’re sharing experiences, memories, and connections.
I’m most proud of my ability to pivot and scale in a challenging market, without relying on major corporate dollars or grant funding. I’m proud of the community of women that has formed around my organization, working together to create initiatives that empower and uplift others. But most of all, I’m proud of Thrift Stories Boutique and the impact it’s having on our community.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most significant lessons I’ve had to unlearn is that I can’t give everything away. As a business owner and nonprofit leader, I’ve always been passionate about serving others and making a positive impact. However, I realized that my tendency to give away my services and expertise for free, or not charging enough, was actually hindering my ability to scale and sustain my business.
I remember working with clients and organizations, pouring my heart and soul into their projects, and either not charging them a dime or not charging enough to truly reflect the value I was bringing. I thought that by doing so, I was building relationships and creating a sense of community. But in reality, I was undervaluing my expertise and setting myself up for burnout.
When I started Thrift Stories Boutique, I had to unlearn this habit and learn to put a value on my services. It wasn’t easy, but I realized that if I wanted to scale my business to $1 million, I couldn’t continue to cut corners or give away my expertise for free or at a discounted rate.
This lesson has been particularly challenging because it’s not just about the money; it’s about recognizing the value that I bring to the table. As a business owner, I’m not just selling products or services; I’m selling my expertise, my time, and my passion. And that deserves to be compensated fairly.
Unlearning this lesson has been a journey, but it’s one that’s allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. I’ve learned to set boundaries, prioritize my time, and communicate my value to clients and partners. It’s liberating to know that I can make a positive impact while also sustaining my business and taking care of myself.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is that not everyone will like me, and that’s okay. As a business owner and leader, I’ve had my fair share of experiences where people haven’t agreed with me, or worse, have spoken negatively about me. But I’ve learned to handle it.
I’ve worked with people from all walks of life, with different personalities, and communication styles. Some have been easy to work with, while others… not so much. I’ve had to learn how to navigate those tricky situations, how to communicate effectively, and how to keep my cool when things get tough.
One particular experience that stands out was when someone publicly criticized my business, questioning my intentions and character. It stung, to be honest. But I took a step back, breathed, and reminded myself of my mission. I asked myself, “Am I being true to my values? Am I serving my community? Am I helping others?” The answer was yes.
I chose not to engage, not to defend myself, and not to let the negativity consume me. Instead, I focused on the people who matter – my community, my clients, and my supporters. I continued to show up, to serve, and to lead with kindness and compassion.
That experience taught me that it’s not about being liked; it’s about being true to myself and my mission. It’s about creating a safe space for others to grow and thrive. It’s about standing firm in my values, even when faced with adversity.
I’m still learning to master my tone, choosing my words carefully, and responding, not reacting. It’s a skill I’m working on, one day at a time. But I’m getting better, and I’m proud of myself for showing up, even when it’s hard. I’m proud of myself for staying focused on my why, and for continuing to move forward, even in the face of challenges.
