We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tina Evans a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
I was in an unhealthy work environment in 2019 doing a job that did not fulfill me. My unhappiness began affecting my health and relationships. I took a big picture look at what I loved doing and contributing, and what that meant for my next job. That reflection led me to walk away from that full-time job and begin a journey of earning certifications in coaching and specific training modules focused on communication, healthy leadership, and strong teams. I was thrilled to start a business. Then 2020 happened and the in-person trainings and events I had scheduled were cancelled. I pivoted to online just like the entire world did and continued to persevere in business-ownership without any entrepreneurial experience. Then, on July 7, 2022, my house caught fire for undetermined reasons. Not only did my family lose our house, the majority of our belongings, and dog, my husband and I both lost our home offices and equipment. Personal and work lives were in chaos. For the first month, we temporarily stayed in four different places living out of a suitcase until we found a house to rent. Over the course of the next 14 months, my focus was on grieving, healing, emotionally supporting my husband and two teenage children, trying to find a new normal, and making plans for what to do next. I relied heavily on my knowledge and leadership tools in my coaching practice to stay self-aware regarding my mental and physical health and focus on being the type of person I would be proud to look back in hindsight on how I navigated this unexpected life event. I strove to be a person of peace and liberation for my family and myself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I equip leaders and business partners with the necessary skills to master the art of leading people and positively impacting this world. People can be great at their jobs or passionate about their businesses, but that doesn’t automatically mean they are great leaders. Being someone who people want to follow requires a distinct skill set that is not often taught. Through 1:1 or group coaching, my clients and I focus on understanding what it’s like to be on the other side of them and ways to increase their health – not just physical, but emotional and mental. Once a person becomes healthy in their leadership and awareness, they can transfer that health into the people they lead. You can’t give away what you don’t possess.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Before I started my entrepreneurial journey, I spent more than 15 years in the non-profit sector. I was highly budget-conscious, and I was used to others donating their time and resources, or heavily discounting them on behalf of the mission. So, when I priced my services, I continued to be budget-conscious about the organizations I was working with. I allowed thoughts around money to cause stress and anxiety every time I was asked about my fees. However, through coaching and surrounding myself with other entrepreneurs, my thoughts about money are in a healthier place for my business and the services I provide.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Authenticity and joy are on my Core Values List.
For me, authenticity equals consistency which equals trust. You will get the same Tina today as you will tomorrow. I’m consistently who I am, and whether you like me or not, I never want someone to question whether they are getting the true me or a fake version. Building trust is crucial to working with coaching clients.
I have so much joy for the work that I do and I’ve been told numerous times that it shows. That is one of the best compliments I can receive.
