We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Timothy & Roshun Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Timothy & Roshun thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
MiiFashion started out first as a t shirt business. We liked the catchy phrases on shirts and wanted to come up with our own phrases. Then one Valentine’s Day we made a jogger pants and matching varsity jacket set with MiiFashion on it. Everywhere we went that day we got tons of compliments on our outfit. People wanted to know where could they purchase the outfit from. From that moment we knew we had to keep going.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are a clothing brand that specializes in making you feel Like it’s your brand. That’s why we named it MiiFashion pronounced My Fashion. We try our best to meet customers idea of what they want to wear. We have urbanwear, men’s wear, women’s wear, undergarments, hats, jackets, and formal wear. It takes a lot of discipline and creativity in this business. You have to stay focused on your craft. Keeping up with current trends is a must i in order to stay relevant. Although we mostly get a lot of urban wear customers, I think us adding formal wear and undergarments is what sets us apart from most “urban wear” clothing brands.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that I need to stay firm on my prices. Mixing business with friends could be a huge problem. People close to you don’t understand that you are a small business and you need to grow just like other major businesses.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
We started our business with our own money from working regular jobs. It took a lot of saving. Sometimes we had to sacrifice going out for fun just to save so our brand could grow. It was all worth it.
