We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Timothy J. Cox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Timothy J. below.
Timothy J., appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I wanted to make acting my life when I was in high school where I did a lot of plays and musicals, but I would say that in those early days, I was more of a mimic than an actor. I borrowed, quite liberally, from TV and movies. I did a lot of impressions and I seemed to be interested more in getting laughs, in being a ham, which I was pretty good at, than being a serious actor. All of that changed when I saw Jack Lemmon in ”Days of Wine and Roses”. The moment that I saw that performance, I was hooked. I saw what he did and was blown away at how he could inspire, enlighten and illuminate, as well as entertain with that performance.
The moment I saw that performance I knew I was an actor..

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an actor who has played close to 200 roles on stage and in film, who specialize in character / supporting roles. I am also a writer and a producer.
My belief is that ”Character actors always work”. Over the years, I have been very fortunate to have had a chance to be a part of many wonderful films and theatrical productions.
In everything I do, I try to be diverse in the types of projects that I get involved in and do projects that challenge me emotionally, mentally, physically. That’s part of the journey of an actor. We are always on the hunt for a challenge. Actors want and should want roles that test them. These days, if a role scares me, I am all in.
Each time I step onto a film set or on to a stage, it’s like going to school. I get to play and pretend, step inside someone else’s shoes and walk around for a little while. I still get fulfillment from that.
You never stop learning in this work. There’s always something else to discover. You can always dig a little deeper, do a little bit more investigation. That’s where the mystery lies in this whole thing.
It’s tough and it should be tough, but it’s also a lot of fun, if you let it be fun.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
When I am in a rehearsal room, on a stage or on a film set, collaborating with my fellow actors, the director, the writers, cinematographers…everyone…that is the best. You’re together with people…all there to create something from the ground up. When the ideas are flowing and everyone has embraced the process, the journey….that’s heaven for me. That’s why I do this work.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Like I said, each time I step onto a film set or on to a stage, it’s like going to school. I get to play and pretend, step inside someone else’s shoes and walk around for a little while. I still get fulfillment from that. I think that’s the mission, to always have that sense of wonder and excitement about the work.
When I lose that sense of wonder, I’ll know that it’s time pack it in.
