We recently connected with Timothy Ellerbe and have shared our conversation below.
Timothy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
This is something I have always wanted to do. It has taken me several decades to get to a point where it is possible.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Music Producer before I am anything else. I have always been comfortable in those shoes. Learning to compose music that resonates with people around the world is itself an art form. I got my start by touring with Detroit legends Enchantment. I learned a lot from them on the road, but I also learned how to better craft songs. Once I determined to go solo, I found I was happy writing and producing for others rather than solely writing songs for myself.
One might think it is easy for artists to find songs that suit them, but it’s not. Just because my clients could sing did not mean every song was for them. As a Producer, it is my job to hear their voice and match it with lyrics, melodies and every other part of the total song. Many I have worked with are amazed at my ability to do that.
I also do a lot of composing for the meditation community via the Insight Timer app. I have been one of their teachers for three years now and have amassed quite a following. With such a global audience, I have learned to better listen to their musical needs and I actively work to better myself in that area.
I will say I am currently most proud of my band’s upcoming sophomore album, which we co-produced. It is entitled Ebb and Flow and is an intensely personal work. I have worked with many Artists over the years, but to be able to do this with my best friend has been a joy.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I fee the biggest hurdle creative people have to overcome is convincing non-creatives of their need for quiet. Our minds work a bit differently and we experience the world differently. For me, it is like seeing everything in a panoramic view all day long in slow motion. I know that sounds a bit ouot there, but that worldview allows me to come up with great music, interesting books and the occasional sketch. I find I have to remind my non-creative friends of my need for time alone because they are not always cognizant of that need.
I will say to every non-creative person seeing this; Don’t take offense if your musician friends disappear into their studio for hours or even days on end. Or if they stay up until four in the morning. We are only working to produce something we can share with the world around us.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I began working with my now Partner, Diamond Davis a few years ago. We have since gained a growing fanbase with our House Music stylings. It ahs been a wonderful, challenging and fun filled journey. Prior to that, I struggled tremendously with trying to find a fan base for my music. Social media as we all know can make or break an Artist. It is more difficult since we know now how hard it is to outwit particular algorithms.
Once DIamond and I began working together, we learned quickly how important social media could be to attract fans of our genre. However, for the better part of two years we still struggled with breaking through to where we wanted to be. A few months ago, Ispoke with a longtime friend who himself, was an accomplished and award winning Artist. He is now working as a Marketing and Branding Agent for up and coming Artists. We hired his company, New Altitude Media to represent us. In two short months, N.A.M has worked nothing short of magic to get Diamond and I some serious attention on social media.
Video views are up, streaming is up. And we have attracted all but one particular age group to our brand. I would suggest to any creative person building their social media presence to find an affordable Branding Agent and allow them to help you. It may cost a bitof money, but they can help you in ways you could not imagine.
