We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Timmy D. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Timmy below.
Timmy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
When I first started songwriting, I was still young in high school. I moved on to college not knowing what I wanted to major in, and I felt I had two choices. One choice was being happy and going to school for music and moving to Nashville. The other choice was to transfer to another college to major in History to become a social studies teacher and that is what I decided to do since it was financially stable. I took the risk to earn money to be able to fund my music dreams. Fast forward to today, I am now a career Firefighter/EMT after teaching social studies for three years still funding and pursing my music dream at the same time. I would say my biggest risk was staying on Long Island where I currently live after having multiple opportunities to move to Nashville, I just felt like the times were not right.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is playing shows and having people sing your songs back to you. As a songwriter, you are vulnerable. These songs are from my own experiences and are a insight into my experiences and life. These songs show my vulnerable side which many people do not get to see. I am opening the door for strangers to listen to my stories and hopefully create a connection to their lives and stories. Playing at Mercury Lounge in New York City or The Bitter End in New York City were some of the first venues I got to play. Listening to the crowd singing your songs with you is so humbling and it makes you realize that you are doing something right. It is a reminder to keep going when you think you won’t make it in the industry. It’s very humbling and rewarding. I am so grateful for those moments.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
When I first decided that I wanted to professionally pursue songwriting, there were many resources I turned to. First, I taught myself guitar and piano learning by ear and Youtube videos. Once I became comfortable playing guitar, I always played songs for my friends and took their advice. I also turned to online courses through Berklee Online and learned more about the music industry gaining valuable knowledge. Books and resources from Pat Pattison and John Kellogg were extremely helpful in the beginning, and I still reference their information to this day. The more information you gain and the more you learn, the more you shape out to be an excellent songwriter. You have to stand out from the others and be unique enough while still having an authentic sound in order to gain that following. After years of songwriting, I have finally found that sound and found the way that writing lyrics works for me. It takes a lot of time.
