We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Timisha Thirkield. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Timisha below.
Alright, Timisha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
My name is Timisha Thirkield and I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. At The Age Of 25, I Founded Mimi’s Designz Company in 2016 two months before my 26th birthday. I stepped away from my current dream job of teaching due to lack of interest. I decided to step out on faith and take up the career of my other dream job was graphic designing and animation. I graduated from Atlanta Technical in 2014, and I wrote a book for my health and safety children class called “BJ Learns To Make A Fruit Pie” and I illustrated the entire book on Microsoft Word and I knew then that I wanted to take up graphic designing down the road. I taught childcare for about six years, and I lost my passion and interest for it; so while working at Atlanta Technical College I enrolled back in school and took up Design and Media Production and I learned how to use Adobe Creative Cloud software (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro etc.), I fell in love with graphic designing and I quit my full time job as a daycare teacher and went to school full time learning the basics of how to use the Adobe software program. While I was unemployed, I thought how I could make money but didn’t want to go back and work a 9-5; so I decided I wanted to open up my own graphic design company. My husband bought me my first computer with $0 to my name Mimi’s Designz Company was born. I promoted non-stop every single day, and I didn’t receive my first client till about a month into launching my business, then my business took off since. Business eventually got slow and I went back to working at the Atlanta Falcons Mercedes Benz Stadium and due to personal situations while I was there I decided mentally and emotionally that a 9-5 was no longer for me. A week after I left my job Covid-19 hit and I thought my business was going to slow down due to Covid and was I wrong. My business flourished and I was able to help many people start and bring their businesses to life and that was the best feeling in the world. I have worked with many clients from Georgia and the UK. My work has been featured on billboards, tv shows, storefronts and much more. I had the honor of working with an NFL Superbowl Champion as well. I plan on having my own building for Mimi’s Designz Company so I can meet more of my clients in person. I plan on expanding and offering bigger and better services to my clients.
Timisha , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Mimi’s Designz Company is a graphic design and branding specialist business. I specialize in logos, business cards. flyers, banners. invitations, websites, social media content videography branding packages etc. anything graphics you name it I can do it, and if I can’t I teach myself how to do then I offer the service to my clients. I am best known for my logos, especially my cartoon logos, where I would take a photo of someone and turn them into a logo using Adobe Illustrator. I am most proud of Mimi’s Designz Company are those who supported me, which were my family, friends but mostly my clients. My clients have shown me so much love from all over the world, not just my hometown Georgia. Being a young female in a dominantly male profession, I was always bashed on doing graphic designing because I was considered too girly, but I can bring any look to life, whether it was for a male or female. My clients showed me I could do anything I can put my mind to and my male clients have been supportive as well and without my clients, there wouldn’t be a Mimi’s Designz Company without them. What sets me apart from others is that my clients love my work so much they allow me to design whatever I like for their business and be able to be myself has made me happy, and I can express myself through my client’s work.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My cofounder/business partner is actually my husband. He was the one who bought my first computer to start my business. He was there when Mimi’s Designz Company was founded. He was always my backbone of the business when I felt like quitting and giving up on my business. He also does the video and technology part of my business which are the websites and video content.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My #1 goal for driving my creative journey is my family. My mom Trina, sisters Omesha and Trena. my husband, my best friends Safiya Ariel W. and my godkids Omari and Samira and my son who is my guardian angel who passed in 2019. They are my world and I do this for them. I want to be able to provide them a life of happiness and I want them to be very proud of me as well and knowing that I did that.
