We recently connected with Timery Spencer and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Timery thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s go back in time to when you were an intern or apprentice – what’s an interesting story you can share from that stage of your career?
When I was going to school for my Integrative Health and Healing degree, it was required that I have 130 hours in as an internship with a similar business as I was looking into. I was dreading this, as I am from a small community, and figured that I would need to drive several nights a week to the metro area for this, as well as working full time and everything else in my life.
I began to research potential internships, so I typed in “Transformation Coaches near me”.
Angie Spartz at Phoenix Rising Wellness LLC popped up, and she was located less than 10 miles from me!
I had met Angie years ago, very briefly at a clothing exchange some friends were having, but I didn’t know that Transformation Coaching was specifically what she did!
I reached out to her, and she was so gracious and willing to help out however she could.
I warned her that I would need to be spending a lot of time with her, and she would need to meet with my professor and sign papers, among many other things that would probably inconvenience her having me along the next 6 months.
She said she understood and would love to help me out.
I was almost in tears at the blessing that this would be; a kind sweet woman, mom to teenagers (same as me), very open to spiritual energy, close in proximity, and a strong independent woman making her own career in this world! And I would get to learn from her!
We got the okay from my professor, and began our brainstorming of how to get these hours in. We agreed to meet weekly for an hour to check in and plan future events. I would attend her Wellness Vendor events around the state, watch some of her recorded coaching sessions, read some of her recommended books, help facilitate a Chakra class she was teaching at a nearby wellness studio, and help to create Canva products for her business, as well as start to dig into a new website platform that she would be using.
I learned from this experience that I shouldn’t expect less just because the source is small, and so many great things from Angie’s warm and genuine heart as she ran her business. She showed me how to plan things ahead with intentionality, and about making the businesses your brand, of who you are what you represent. She taught me how to glean as much knowledge and information as possible from mentors and others who have gone before in the business. She taught me catchy ways to get people to sign up for newsletters with QR codes, and to have drawings that educated customers on her products as well as giving them a chance to win something. But I believe that the most important thing she taught me was to be aligned with what you feel called to do, and to be open with positivity to what is coming your way, not being afraid to let go of the things that aren’t in alignment with your conscience. I couldn’t have imagined a better person to be matched up with for this. I plan on leading with the same focus that she illuminated; to help others listen to what brings them joy and freedom, and empowering them to move toward that life filled destination.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a wife, mother of three, Administrative Assistant at a middle school, and my passion is having real, genuine interactions with people. I got into this industry when I was hired to staff Student Services at a middle school, and I realized how much I loved listening to students, and helping them to identify how they were feeling, and what choices they could make to help their lives move in a more positive direction. I looked into returning to college to finish a counseling degree, but realized the internship hours would have been over 1,000, and with having limited time already with my kids at home, I wasn’t willing to give that much time at that point of my life. I read about a two year Integrative Health and Healing degree that I could complete online through a local community college, and the internship required for that would have only been about 130. That seemed more realistic for me, and so then I also became certified as a Transformation Coach online.
I provide individual and group coaching, offering both a spiritually focused curriculum, and a transformation focused curriculum. Some of the problems that we work through together are moving away from shame into a victorious independent life, learning to love ourselves so much that we don’t let the words and actions of others sink in as truth and tear us down, helping to focus on the future without letting anxiety imprison the individual.
I am most proud that I made a way for me to provide for my family by doing something that I’ve always received so much life from. I am also proud of the fact that I’m not a traditional, strictly clinical coach, I am a relatable, warm, accepting human that truly believes that everyone has tremendous individual value to offer the world.
I don’t expect or aspire to be the biggest, most prominent Life Coach in the United States, but I do look forward to seeing what people are brought my way that I can be there for to listen and guide.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would love to be able to go back and start college over, and complete my Counseling Degree right away from that young age. I ultimately quit college for about 15 years because after two attempts at an ‘intro-to algebra’ level class, I was not able to pass. I eventually tried a Logic class that was considered math, and all of a sudden my brain understood it! If I could have started with a logic class and eliminated that math frustration, I would have been done at 21 with my degree, and could have moved up and up financially and status wise through the counseling world. But I am still thankful for the journey that brought me here.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I initially had a plan to start my business in the Spring of ’22, and grow it over the summer, and then quit my Administrative Assistant job in December of ’22. What I didn’t take into account was several things: 1) How important and affordable insurance through my Administrative Assistant job was compared to being self-employed with insurance, 2) How much time I wouldn’t have in the fall and winter of ’22 to continue to market and try to keep up with my clients. Instead, I decided to realize that at this season in both of my careers, I would be a full time Administrative Assistant in the school year, and focus on meeting with people and facilitating groups in the summer when I was off. If the coaching eventually totally takes over and outweighs working at the school, then I would pivot again and move from there, but in the meantime, I’m very thankful for both opportunities.
