We were lucky to catch up with Timea Laczko recently and have shared our conversation below.
Timea, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
The first memory I have of myself mentioning acting was when I was about 3 years old. Growing up, I was a shy kid believe it or not, but when I was on stage (for our kindergarten plays) I was a different person, I was confident, shining all the way. So it must’ve been after one of these productions. I looked at my mom and said, when I grow up, I am going to move to Hollywood and be in the movies. So that was me as a kid with a dream; now, the real plan began when I was about 15 years old, and the acting spark lit up in me again. I knew I wanted to pursue acting, but I didn’t know where to start, so my first stop was England; to master the English language and become accustomed to being by myself. And then I came up with my plan. I was going to graduate high school in England, then move to the states to pursue my artistic path. A broad plan, but that’s been working so far, still figuring things out along the way, but I am doing it.

Timea, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So, as mentioned before, I am an actress, and I found my passion for this craft at a very young age. As life happens, my life took me on all sorts of paths, but I always remained true to my passion, and I knew acting was what I had to be doing, it was who I am. I have training and experience in both film and theatre, been acting full time for a few months now, making connections and I am starting to write, produce and act in my own creations. I think it’s extremely important that artists keep on creating, no matter how hard things can get; as long as there is an idea and dedication, there will always be a win of some sort. I get most of my inspiration from the outside world, I love observing people, sometimes I would just sit quietly in a corner, people might think I am shy, when in reality, I am adding whatever’s happening around me to my agenda of characters. Acting is probably the most challenging and yet rewarding thing I have ever had the pleasure of doing. It is not only about booking the role and memorizing lines, you have to become the character, at least in my eyes. For the sets I have been on, I have multiple approaches to the characters I am portraying, getting better and better as I gain more experience behind the camera, as my training is mostly based on theatre; a little leap off from film.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Whenever life gets hard, which so often happens, I think about my 3 year old self and how proud she would be of me right now. Yes, I am not perfect, I make a lot of mistakes, but to her, I seem invincible. I have also made my mom a promise, that she was going to see me on the big screen one day. My mom’s always been my biggest supporter, number one fan and I just want to make her proud. I promised her I will play a super hero one day, naming Wonder Woman, and I know I am not going to stop until I will have fulfilled my promise, because I am a woman of my word. People tell me my dreams are too big, too lousy, too unplanned, but I do believe that as long as you put in the work and you try, something’s gotta come out eventually. I am addicted to improving, and I know I have high expectations from myself and little training at this point, but this is a journey, and as long as I am enjoying it, my goals are going to be attainable in the future.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, probably the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the impact you have on the public. And I am not talking about the praise you get after doing a good job. I am talking about bringing a character to life that other people can relate to. For me, identifying with a character, being seen and understood is everything. Quite often in my childhood I felt like I didn’t belong, but there was always a movie/character that would give me hope and help me keep going. From a shy kid with anxiety, to fighting for my acting career all alone in Hollywood, I had to watch a bunch of movies about success to get the courage I needed to embark on this journey. So making people feel good about themselves when they watch your work is why I am doing what I am doing. So that in a few years, I can be the one encouraging a little girl from the country side of Romania to believe in herself and never stop dreaming, because just as Walt Disney said (this is my fav quote) if you can dream it, you can do it.
