We were lucky to catch up with Timberlynn Platenburg recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Timberlynn, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?

Growing up, my parents did many things right, and their impact on my life and career has been profound. Although we weren’t wealthy, I had two hardworking, loving parents who made sure my sister and I had the best they could give us. I never wanted for anything.

Any extracurricular activity I wanted to try, my parents found a way to make it happen. From gymnastics and ice skating to basketball, tennis, and karate, you name it, I probably tried it. I was always a very ambitious child, and my parents nurtured that ambition. My mom worked at a high school and emphasized the importance of education, while my dad, an appliance service technician, taught us independence. I remember Saturday mornings waking up early to help mow the grass, riding the tractor and complaining at the same time.

We also grew up in a household that loved animals. I’ve had rabbits, hamsters, fish, dogs, cats, lizards, and birds, which cultivated my deep love for animals. My mom took me on college tours and to summer camps where I experienced rock climbing, rappelling, hiking, and more, leading to my love for the outdoors. Her entrepreneurial spirit—manifested in various ventures from makeup and balloons to coffee and insurance—instilled in me a drive to pursue my own business ventures.

As a realtor and property manager, these experiences have shaped me in numerous ways. My upbringing taught me the value of hard work, persistence, and adaptability. The independence my father instilled in me means I can tackle challenges head-on and find creative solutions for my clients. My mother’s entrepreneurial spirit drives me to constantly seek new opportunities and innovative approaches in my career.

Growing up with a love for animals and the outdoors allows me to connect with clients on a personal level, understanding their needs and preferences. My ambition, fostered by my parents, ensures that I am dedicated to achieving the best outcomes for those I work with. My past has made me appreciative of the small things, which helps me create meaningful, lasting relationships with my clients.

My name is Timberlynn Platenburg, from Houston Texas. I’m a realtor with Keller Williams Red Stick Partners, a property manager for a luxury community in Denham Springs, Louisiana, a podcast host for “I Got Drank,” and a fashion and beauty content creator. My passion for helping others and creating meaningful connections stems from my upbringing, where my parents taught me the values of perseverance, independence, and creativity. As a realtor, I guide clients through buying, selling, and renting properties, ensuring a smooth and successful process. As a property manager, I ensure residents enjoy a high-quality living experience. Through my podcast, I engage with fascinating guests, and on social media, I share my love for fashion and beauty. What sets me apart is my diverse background, which includes exploring various activities and embracing an entrepreneurial spirit, allowing me to offer unique insights and solutions. How do you keep your team’s morale high?

Managing a team effectively and maintaining high morale is crucial for success. As a property manager, I’ve led a team of up to six people, and I view my team as family. I believe in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. I maintain an open-door policy, ensuring my team knows they can talk to me about anything, which builds trust and helps address issues promptly. Regular recognition and appreciation of their hard work and achievements make them feel valued and motivated. Organizing team-building activities and social events strengthens bonds and creates a positive work atmosphere. I encourage continuous learning and provide opportunities for professional growth, supporting their career aspirations and making them feel invested in their roles. Additionally, I strive to create a positive and inclusive work environment where everyone feels comfortable and respected, boosting morale and productivity. By understanding and accommodating personal needs and providing support during challenging times, I help maintain a healthy work-life balance, ensuring my team remains motivated, engaged, and committed to achieving our goals together.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

Throughout my journey, I’ve faced numerous challenges and setbacks, but they have only strengthened my resilience and determination. As a woman of color, I’ve had to navigate additional hurdles in my career. Starting as a leasing agent, I worked my way up to an assistant manager and then to a corporate trainer. Despite my dedication and hard work, I often found myself overlooked for growth opportunities, watching others who didn’t share my skin color advance ahead of me. While this was discouraging, it fueled my resolve to keep pushing forward.

I eventually secured my first property manager position with a company where I felt truly accepted and surrounded by positivity and encouragement. This supportive environment allowed me to thrive, and it wasn’t long before I was chosen to manage a brand-new multimillion-dollar project—an achievement that truly highlights my journey from where I started to where I am today.

My perseverance also extended to obtaining my real estate license. It took me longer than usual due to various personal obstacles, but I remained determined. Despite the setbacks, I kept pushing and finally achieved my goal.

These experiences have taught me the value of resilience and the importance of staying committed to one’s goals, no matter the challenges. I’m proud of where I’ve come from and where I am today, and I hope my story inspires others to persevere and reach their own dreams.
