We were lucky to catch up with Tim Orscheln recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tim thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you find your key vendor or vendors? Maybe you can share the backstory and share some context and the relevant details to help us understand why you chose them, why they chose you, etc.
Finding key vendors is a challenging yet rewarding journey in my book and it is a process you must learn. I believe that getting to know your vendors is just as important as getting to know your customers. I start by researching extensively online, scouring industry forums, attending trade shows, and leveraging my network for recommendations. After identifying several potential vendors, I reach out to them to discuss their offerings, pricing, and terms. Negotiations are always thorough, involving multiple rounds of discussions to ensure that both parties understand expectations and deliverables. At the end of the day, you have to enjoy working with your vendors and trust they will work just as hard for you as you do for the customer.
Ultimately, I partner with vendors who demonstrate not only exceptional product quality but also a commitment to collaboration and innovation. Their willingness to customize their services to meet our specific needs is a significant factor in our decisions. Reflecting on this process, I realize the importance of due diligence and clear communication in establishing strong vendor relationships. Every time I go through the vendor process, I focus even more on building a rapport and understanding of the vendor’s long-term vision to ensure a sustainable partnership.
The great thing about vendor selection is that it never gets old. Every interaction teaches valuable lessons about the importance of patience, persistence, and the need to balance cost with quality.
What I take most from my experience:
“Businesses don’t buy from businesses; people buy from people”. Take care of those who take care of you and the doors to success are soon to open.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have to give credit for my entrepreneurial spirit to my Dad. I was raised in a small farming community in the Midwest and was taught the value of hard work at an early age. Although I deviated from those disciplines for many years as most young men do, I was never one to shy away from a challenge. In 1993 I bought a hat in Mexico from a street vendor for fifty cents and turned that purchase into a million-dollar uniform & apparel company. I was off to the races and spent the next 30+ years building companies within the textile, food & beverage, real estate, hospitality, roofing and now home services industries.
HomeLyfe was created out of a personal need for my own home, especially concerning my aging asphalt shingle roof. When my wife and I purchased our home, the roof was already showing signs of wear. After the first monsoon of the season, I found piles of granules scattered around the property. Every roofer I consulted insisted on selling me an expensive roof replacement, even though I believed my roof wasn’t beyond saving. Recognizing a troubling trend in the roofing industry, I decided to start a company focused on providing homeowners with practical and cost-effective solutions for maintaining and protecting their home’s equity, we call this equity maintenance.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
