We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tim Mathis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tim, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
So I moved to Los Angeles in 2017 after doin a spot on Hart of the City with Kevin Hart and jumped into comedic acting. Unfortunately this was right around the time that Hollywood started making less comedies in general and many were, well, not all that funny.
To that end it was hard to get excited about the projects that came my way. Eventually I did meet my co-writer JD Belser and after discussing this issue with the state of modern comedies we decided to write our own which led to the current project we are working on, Mega Bowl, a mockumentary and (hopefully) the first big movie about frisbee golf. The mission now is to get it funded and made.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I always wanted to be in some type of entertainment and after I did four years in the Navy I went to school for broadcasting. Fell into radio and had my own show for a few years but after the station was sold I got laid off. Used that time to pursue a dream, doing stand-up comedy.
Oddly enough I was better at stand-up than radio and my career took off. I started opening and working at various clubs throughout my home state of Texas and eventually caught the eye of the right people who suggested me to Kevin Hart for a new show he was doin on Comedy Central called Hart of the City. Ended up doin a spot on his show then moved out to LA to pursue comedic acting.
Landed a national commercial on my first audition which led to getting an agent and now I was on my way. Thats when I started seeing so many lackluster comedic scripts and decided to start writing my own with the help of my writing partner. Today we are running our company Gatecrashers, Inc and looking to get literary representation and finalizing our pitch deck for Mega Bowl. Check out our website www.GatecrashersInc.com for more info.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The primary (and pretty much only) goal right now is to get Mega Bowl made. Admittedly when it comes to selling a script or producing a movie I’m flying blind but I do know the script is funny and the current state of comedy films, with some exceptions, is in tatters. To that end we are currently finalizing our pitch deck. We were tryin to finish it before the WGA strike ended but the pitch is a project in itself. Finishing up the sizzle and our latest rewrite but should be ready to pitch in a few weeks.
One aspect I didnt know was how hard it would be to find a literary agent but we are still working on that. Worst case scenario with the project being low-budget may just end up funding it ourselves but hopefully we can get some funding and give the script the financial backing it deserves to make the movie the right way.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the primary lessons I had to unlearn was to not let the haters get to you. Perhaps unsurprisingly comedians can be a catty and jealous lot. I came from radio so I already had the basics like writing, my persona etc worked out so when I arrived on the comedy scene I took off pretty quickly. This irked some more experienced comics and I received a good bit of backlash. Unfortunately I had a tendency to take the hate personally and lashed out but back then I didnt realize that folks only hate on you when youre doing something. Once I realized that and started to ignore the haters the whole process got a lot easier.
Oddly enough I’ve found that the comedy scene and acting scene in LA is a lot more supportive than the scenes I experienced in smaller markets. Actors seem to root for their pals getting good roles and opportunities. Speaking of opportunities just wanna thank y’all for the interview and the chance to get more info out about the current project, Mega Bowl the first major film about frisbee golf. We are currently in pre-production and pushing to get it finished sometime in 2024, Gatecrashersinc, com for more info.
