We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tim Lizardi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tim , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
One major thing I have learned that it to takes to be successful is persistence and passion, the two kind of go hand and hand the persistence is needed because no matter how well prepared you may think you are things never really go as planned and you may fall on a few set backs that the persistence will help you overcome and learn from and the passion is needed for this as well because sometimes on the road to success it gets very rocky and can bring a lot of self doubt so you need to have the passion to keep pushing you to move forward when it may feel like that may not be the right road to take at the moment.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I originally started out as a dj and also working in marketing and promotions for many different hiphop artists including Freekey Zekey and Jim jones (diplomats) stack bundles and Grafh along with many others.
Then I began collecting art and combined my love of hiphop and art and opened the addictive arts house gallery in 2017, Gearing the gallery towards collectors looking for a less conventional art gallery with a heavy hiphop influence .
After 6yrs of being a gallerist I have branched out into artist management working with new up and coming artists .
I think one thing that has been consistent in all the different fields I have been lucky to work in is all based off of a passion and has been exciting to organically grow into a larger version of what I set out to start and has connected me with a lot of amazing like minded individuals from all different backgrounds but all rooted with a common love for art and that has opened a lot of doors I would’ve never imagined
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Before starting addictive art’s house I was working in marketing & promotions for hiphop artists and also booking shows,as the industry changed and the focus of event booking transitioned from artists to reality tv personality’s I lost a lot of interest in the field and began art collecting and through that new hobby it became a new passion which lead to me finding addictive art’s house and running for 6yrs
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The initial start up of addictive arts house was funded by actually selling my personal art collection to fund an build the business because being new in the industry I didn’t feel comfortable consigning work from artists until I was more comfortable establish a track record of sales and experience running a art gallery
