We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tim Benson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tim, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Overall, I am happier as a business owner – mainly because I feel that I have at least some control over my business and personal success.
As with many business owners, there are days where I say to myself “man…just please somebody tell me what to do! It’s tough always having to be the one with the answers, haha!”
I can’t point to a specific time when that scenario happened, but our company has so many moving parts, clients and services that we provide that when, on the rare occasion, something didn’t work out quite right at all, it was up to me and other senior leaders to “diagnose” the issue and then try to figure out how to adapt, solve and prevent for the next time. The REAL skill needed for entrepreneurship is the ability to problem solve.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started in music at a very early age and then over the course of time, went through the whole experience; graduated college in music, went on tour with a band, then eventually opened up my own music school. From that point I got connected to a national music coaching program that opened the doors for business development on a much bigger level.
Once our school was well established, I was asked to create a company to help others market their schools. And from that my company, NetScore, was born.
We leaned into digital marketing with a heavy emphasis on direct response and eventually A.I. as that technology became more developed. We’ve helped hundreds of brick and mortar businesses with their lead generation all of the world.

We take pride in understanding where our clients have previously struggled with in regards to marketing, educating them and then taking personal attention to help them get to their next big milestones in their business’s growth.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
We are proud to say that 95% of our clients come from referrals and in-person conferences. It is greatly important to nurture happy clients and through that channel along with presenting value at conferences all over the U.S., potential clients can easily see how our services can help them.
Providing free value at these conferences is important as well – at the very least, if you ever see NetScore at a conference, you are going to walk away with some great tips, strategies, ideas – regardless of if you ever choose to work with us or not.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I quickly had to unlearn that being “perfect” was the only way.
In reality, people need a good product or service. They want communication and personal attention.
Years ago, I would actually hold off on communicating until I felt a marketing campaign was “perfect” in my eyes. The problem with that is – there really is no such thing as perfect, and all I was doing was bypassing other very important elements like communicating frequently and setting realistic expectations. There is no one size fits all and the more time I can take with each client to understand their needs, that was just as important as campaign results.
