We were lucky to catch up with Tijuana Hairston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tijuana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
My backstory of my business started off from me doing my friends and family’s hair. I never thought this would be something I’d continue doing as an adult. As the years went by I began to realize and understand how so many individuals loved to change their look which made them feel much more beautiful as they already were. Wigs, bundles and extensions were becoming the highlight of people lives and they were loving it and so was I. This is when I came up with the idea of starting my own hair/braiding business. I had no idea how to start my own business but I researched everything on how to get started and I followed every detail step by step.
A lot of times people are so afraid to take risk but if you don’t take a risk you will never know what you’re capable of. For me if the opportunity presents it’s self then I’m going for it and that’s what I did! Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t easy but once I got that chance to execute my idea I went straight for it.
One barrier that tried to stop my process was finding a nice space for my business, I must have gotten turn down at least 30 times but I didn’t give up. After weeks and months of contacting realtors this one company finally gave me a chance. After three months of painting, decorating and inspections I finally opened my very first physical location “Beauty Boss Hair Gallery”. This was one of the best moments of my life. After opening and having my business for a little over a year I had to relocate. At one point I would think to myself, was it worth the risk. I can honestly say every call, email and money spent was well worth it. I now have a successful online Hair Store, Boutique and Hair Shop
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hello, my name is Tijuana Hairston and I am a entrepreneur and a online Hair Store/Shop business owner. I originate from a small town named Danville, Virginia and I now reside in North Carolina.
My business journey started from a teenager experimenting with doing her friends and family’s hair. Back then braids had been out for years but to my friends and I extensions just became popular. So we would try these extensions on each other until we finally got it right lol. After years, extensions, weaves, lace front wigs, tape ins ect has become a trending beauty statement. And within those years Beauty Boss Hair Gallery was created.
Beauty Boss Hair Gallery provides services that helps individuals continue to feel beautiful. We display a variety of wigs, extensions and braided styles. With these services we love to help people with hair loss, alopecia and other important hair needs.
What makes Beauty Boss different is we show our customers how much we care. We provide excellent customer service, Same Day services and compassion for our customers.
I am mostly proud of my family for motivating me, for executing my plan and for my customers who has been here from the beginning.
Beauty Boss Hair brand has the best quality hair, clothes, braids, the best customer service, great techniques and we are customer and kids friendly.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
It takes a lot to build your reputation and clientele. What helped me with building my reputation is have multiple business platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Facebook market place, TikTok ect. It can become overwhelming but you have to be consistent.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
For me it has been word of mouth from my customers and social media platforms.
