We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiffiny Mahrer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffiny, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
It’s a dream being able to support myself solely with my art as a Tattoo Artist. None of it would be possible if it weren’t for my sister Sarah, who supported me through my apprenticeship by allowing to let me live rent free at her house in exchange for help around the house and with my little nephew. Because of that, I was able to focus on my learning completely and was able to get my full license in a decent amount of time. Knowing what I know now I don’t think I could have sped up the process or achieved it differently, I owe a great deal to my sister.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Tiffiny and I am a Tattoo Artist. I knew I wanted to be a tattoo artist since I was 13 years old, and I have been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil. Art has always been apart of me, and I always knew I would be doing art for my entire life, it just feels natural to me. I made the decision at 13 to become a tattoo artist due to losing a close father figure who was also a tattoo artist to a heart attack. I provide permanent, custom decorative markings to peoples skin with a machine using needles. People come to me with an idea with photo references and I take it and turn it into a custom original drawing to permanently place on their skin. Some of my favorite kinds of tattoos to do are anime, game, cartoon, and glitter pieces, but love variety and enjoy many other styles. Something that sets me apart from others is my passion for art and my drive to continually grow and learn as much as I can. Art is my entire life and I can’t see myself doing anything else.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think society needs to realize just how important art is, it’s all around us and is responsible for everything we love and enjoy. It is one of the oldest forms from humanity and will always be apart of us. Entertainment and creation are incredibly powerful things and life would be a fraction of what it is if it weren’t for art. Support artists by buying their creations. Follow, share, and like on social media, it is the main source of exposure for a lot of artists and helps tremendously for business and self-esteem.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist, is all the art I am able to create for so many interesting individuals and learning from them and the pieces I do for them, to be able to create even more art and to learn even more. It’s the constant imagination and creative flow that I thrive on.
