We recently connected with Tiffiany Johnson and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffiany, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
In October of 2019, I finally met my client turned close friend, NeSha Lewis. In November of 2019, I started providing services to her. I remember, hurting my foot & still working on it. I wasn’t sure how bad it was, but I was determined to finish my clients as promised. Putting others before myself just comes easy to me. This particular day, she literally gave me her shoes! Nike flip flops to be exact. I know you’re probably thinking, Ew! Me on the other hand, was amazed that someone could be so selfless! She wouldn’t let me refuse her care either, because I definitely tried lol. To have someone care for me like that…someone with no obligation to me…someone who at that time hadn’t even known me for a long time, was a moment that I will never forget. She’s not aware of me sharing this story, but Thank You for your kindness that day, and for loving me girl.
Tiffiany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Tiffiany Johnson, and I’m a licensed cosmetologist based in Jacksonville, Florida. I graduated from Paul Mitchell Jacksonville in 2018. I’m a certified natural hair extensionist, which is a fancy way of saying that I only install hair extensions on natural hair. Prioritizing the actual health and integrity of textured hair, client education, customer service, ensuring a complete salon experience, and teaching hair care professionals how to increase their revenue are a few things that set me apart from others in an ever-changing field. All in all, I help women feel better through the art of hair.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
This is definitely an area that I will call a ongoing “work in progress.” The days of only handing out business cards, and word of mouth are slim when it comes to growing your business/brand. The pressure of being present on so many different platforms, and figuring out the different algorithms is a struggle! The reality is, that old hard copy portfolio we used to carry around, has turned digital. You want to be accessible in that space. I would have to say that being consistent, personable, knowing “your audience”, and being authentic are essential in building a social media presence. I believe that people see your work, but they really buy into your vibe. I will also say that it’s crucial that you don’t get caught up in The whirlwind of how many likes or followers you have, or don’t have in comparison to someone else. Invest in yourself-it’s costs to level up (time, money, etc.) Lastly, always remember this: There is someone you’re inspiring, someone who needs you at every part of your journey, and that you’re exactly where you need to be. Just enjoy it.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
My product line is named Mary My Hair, and I currently have a Botanical Growth Oil. It’s unisex, and great for all hair types. I have always wanted to create products specifically tailored to textured hair, and common scalp/hair issues. Backstory: Last year in November, my grandmother passed away. That was a hard time, and honestly I’ve learned that the grief doesn’t go away…you just find ways to carry it differently as you begin to move through life without Your Person. For a while, I could not come up with a name for it, nothing would stick! I knew I wanted to do something to carry on her name. With the help of a friend, MARY MY HAIR was born. It actually helped me move forward in many ways, knowing that I’m doing something that she’d be proud of, and still carrying her with me each day. To anyone wanting to create a product I’d say this: it’s important to know what you want to create, what problem you want your product to solve/how it’s going to help others, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and make it meaningful. So far, MARY MY HAIR has been very successful in helping my customers with hair growth, and other common hair problems.
