We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tiffany Purnell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tiffany below.
Tiffany , appreciate you joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I have worked in the helping profession across continuums and various client populations for a number of years but it wasn’t until I received a call from a Harris County Asst. District Attorney inquiring my assistance with discharge planning and resources for an inmate returning to the community that I realized my experience and insight meant something.
To this day I do not know how this person came across my contact information but I am very appreciative of the value added to me and my passion for the helping profession from that encounter. As a result I began podcasting tackling taboo topics amongst black and brown communities and in turn my podcast has extended to community outreach engagements regarding health and wellness and minority mental health.

Tiffany , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker by trade and I consider myself to be a Community Activist – as owner and operator of Jay Kencole Marketing, a social marketing agency my goal is to bring about education, awareness and impact to the uncomfortablity associated with taboo topics impacting black and brown communities. The agency as a whole stands on three pillars (ie. impact, outreach and empowerment).
The byproduct of these pillars includes:
*Biweekly podcasting with discussion topics such as breaking generational curse, establishing wealth beyond dollars and cent sense, self care and wellness
*A quarterly community magazine highlighting minority entrepreneurs impacting communities in the Houston and surrounding areas through representation and outreach
*Seasonal women’s empowerment gatherings
*Routine community outreach engagements such as a family game night bring awareness to financial literacy and wealth building
*Annual signature events such as a Minority Mental Health Symposium held annually in July that includes a panel of professionals discussing minority mental health and a Visionary Party held every December that brings individuals together to canvas a blueprint of their goals for the upcoming year through interactive goal setting activities and dialogue.
I often find the ‘problem’ within black and brown communities is access and awareness. Thus through representation and passion for empowering my community I bring that by way of each of these pillars in a realistic down to earth mode of translation through social media platforms and into the community. The bulk of services and products provided by Jay Kencole Marketing are family friendly with the goal in mind to keep the conversation and outreach going far beyond the agency encounter.
What sets us apart, are the safe spaces we create to share in open dialogue. The ‘talk topics’ discussed are those that oftentimes we as black and brown communities are already in conversations about at happy hour amongst friends, with colleagues in the office break room and at family gatherings at the dinner table that turns into the spades table when the food is cleared. As one of Tiff’ Talks avid supporters says Jay Kencole is the “secret sauce”, bringing visibility to taboo topics such as self care being more than spa days and brunch, that Uncle Bubba’s frequent bizarre behaviors are more than him “just spazzing out” and does no good to being swept under the rug, that its completely appropriate to have faith and a therapist at the same time and that there are viable investments beyond ones 401K and a savings account at Wells Fargo.
What my team and I am most proud of this year is having hosted our first health and wellness fair this past Spring. We were able to partner with various vendors to bring about services and resources regarding health and wellness including HIV testing; diabetes education; healthy food demonstration; local vegan and sea moss vendor services; accessible mental health services; onsite interactive yoga and step classes; faith based and early literacy outreach and education on whole life insurance vendor services.
The highlight of Jay Kencole Marketing is connectivity and for those of interest who have a passion to empower the community in which we all live I look forward to connecting with you.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My passion for REPRESENTATION – I am a detail oriented visional person thus I believe it is so important to see what one can achieve. Furthermore, empowering through visibility my reputation in the community has been built on this and continues to elevate as such. Additionally I am supported by an amazing team- Executive Talk Partners Kenshay Saxton and Talk Partners Kenneth Parker and Jaydi’en Brown that support the goals, mission and outreach of Jay Kencole Marketing and collaborative effort we get the job done. Additionally we host a community of avid Talk Supporters that align with Jay Kencole’s services and outreach.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Accessibility – believe it or not sometimes the barrier or problem is not availability but accessibility. Prime example in recent times there have been mental health resources made available for black and brown community however just as available as these resources are connecting to these resources are not as readily accessible as you think. Thus Jay Kencole Marketing goes into the community bringing along with us education, experience, insight, resources and services to empower and leverage the impact beyond the initial engagement.
We don’t look for the community to come to us we create safe spaces within the community to be sure connectivity is accessible to all by meeting the need where the need may be.
