One of the most transformative pieces of advice I offered as a virtual fitness coach and nutrition expert was to a busy mom struggling to balance her wellness journey with home and work responsibilities. Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One pivotal lesson I had to unlearn was that more exercise isn’t always better for fat loss and health. Coming from a background where ‘no pain, no gain’ was the mantra, it took time to understand and embrace the science of recovery and its role in sustainable fitness. The backstory is rooted in my personal fitness journey, where I once believed that pushing myself to exhaustion was the only path to achieving my goals. This led to my own burnout and injuries, which contradicted the wellness lifestyle I now advocate.
Emphasizing smarter, not harder workouts, aligns with evidence-based fitness principles. It’s about optimizing hormonal balance, managing stress, and nurturing the body. This approach not only supports long-term health and fat loss but also promotes a more positive relationship with exercise and nutrition. Resilience, for me, is not just a concept but a lived experience. I have been navigating the unpredictable waters of lupus and fibromyalgia, conditions that bring about not only physical pain but also emotional and psychological battles. There were periods of intense flares, where I was dependent on a variety of medications, including steroids, which led to weight gain and further impacted my self-image and mental health.
However, through these trials, I found a deeper sense of purpose. I focused on what I could control—my nutrition, my mindset, and the small activities I could manage. Each step forward in my journey was a victory, no matter how small. This personal battle gave me invaluable insights into the struggles my clients face. My experience has become a source of empathy and understanding in my coaching, allowing me to connect with and support others in a more profound way. The journey was tough, but it reinforced my belief that with resilience, support, and adaptive strategies, anyone can overcome their hurdles and move towards a healthier, happier life.
