We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiffany Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tiffany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My journey to becoming an author began while I was RVing across the country with my partner and my two cats, Emmylou and Oliver. I would share stories and about the cats and our adventures on Facebook. One day a friend reached out saying the stories would make a great children’s book, but I had no idea how to make that a reality, or where to begin.
A bit later, we stayed at an RV park in Coeur d’Alene, ID that was packed with lots of kids. They loved coming to visit the cats and helping me take them on walks in their stroller. On The morning we were leaving for our next stop, one of the little girls named Avery knocked on the door and said, “I had my mom wake me up early so I could say goodbye to you and the cats.” I teared up and that’s when I knew I wanted to write stories for kids.
Tiffany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born and raised in Douglas, WY. My partner and I started spending winters in Arizona until moving here in 2018. We love to travel, but not all hotels are cat-friendly, so we decided to get an RV and spend the hot summer months on the road.
I wrote my first book, “The Magical Tales of Emmylou and Oliver: Street Cat For A Day” about our time RVing in Grangeville, ID. While the writing part was easy, sorting out the publishing side was difficult. I had no idea what I was doing and hit many speed bumps along the way, but I refused to quit. I found an online group of writers who helped connect me with a publisher. I sent the publisher a brief description of the book and pictures of the cats and landed a meeting.
Five years later, I’ve just released the second book of the series, “Beach Cat For A Day,” and will continue to share our RV adventures in many books to come.
I haven’t seen many children’s books about two Persian cats RVing around the country. Not only do the books have special messages, but the illustrations are bright and eye-catching. My illustrator Barbara is amazing!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love the messages that are in both books. I thought having the cats and other animals relay those messages in their own special way would be perfect for the kids to understand. I think everyone needs to be reminded of some of these messages, like acceptance and kindess, because sometimes we forget.
“The Magical Tales of Emmylou and Oliver: Beach Cat For A Day” is about embracing your unique qualities and loving what you are given. It’s also about being kind and making new friends, no matter what kind of “animal” you are.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Touching people’s hearts and making them smile and feel good. When the kids light up when they see the cats and tell me they love the stories, that’s the best feeling!
