We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiffany Moon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffany, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Although I have traditional Chinese ‘tiger’ parents who were tough on me growing up, I feel that they impacted my life and career because they led by example and taught me the value of hard work. When they immigrated to America to go to school, they barely spoke the language and had few possessions. Through their perseverance and hard work, they were able to achieve ‘the American Dream.’ By watching them work hard and overcome their many struggles, it has given me inspiration to pursue my dreams as well.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started my line of Aromasthesia Candles during the quarantine. As an anesthesiologist and mom, I was used to always working and having very little ‘down time.’ When COVID hit, all of our elective surgeries were cancelled and all my charity events, parties, trips were cancelled so I found myself with more time. I also suffer from severe anxiety and tend to do better when I have a task or goal at hand, so instead of sitting around and worrying, I decided to channel my anxiety into something positive so I started experimenting with different essential oils and making candles in my basement. I made a batch and sent them out to all my healthcare worker friends as a “Covid Care Package” and one of my friends loved my candle so much that she encouraged me to try and sell them. Soon thereafter, Aromasthesia was born- named for my love or AROMAtherapy and aneSTHESIA (Aroma-Sthesia). I started out with just 1 scent but now have 20 and all the candles are named after different anesthetic medications and have tag lines. For example, propofol (a drug we use to put people to sleep for anesthesia) is a relaxing blend of roses and currant and is “for humans who need a nap.” Another popular candle, alprazolam aka Xanax, is “for humans who are anxious” and smells like jasmine bamboo and is a fan favorite. The candles are sold online through shop.tiffanymoonmd.com and in a few select spas/retailers. We are also proud to donate a portion of the proceeds to The Family Place, the largest provider of domestic violence services in Texas.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I am an anesthesiologist and I absolutely love my profession. Not many people understand what we do, but I explain it by telling patients that I will be their guardian angel during surgery to look after them and care for them while they are having surgery. It really blends my passion of pharmacology, physiology, and organization together perfectly.
Any advice for managing a team?
Hire good people that share your vision for your company. Make sure they know that you respect and value their hard work and dedication and once in a while, don’t forget to have a little fun!
