Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tiffany Mitchell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tiffany, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned to create the art I make through experimentation. I was born and raised in San Diego, Ca. My family often took day trips to Laguna Beach. I always loved the vibe there, something very special, so full of art and creativity. As an adult when I went back to visit Laguna Beach I would wander through certain galleries and the art in them inspired me to create my own art. I started by purchasing different sized canvases and various art mediums and from there I just really started having fun, enjoying myself with textures and colors. I started to look at everyday objects and think of the possibilities of incorporating them into art pieces. I have used eggs shells, ace bandages, plants, flowers, bottle caps, combs and glass beads just to name a few. In contemplating what I could have done to speed up my learning process I landed on that I wouldn’t want to. In creating art there is no speeding up or slowing down, it just flows through you at its own pace. For me the most essential skills come from being inspired by other artists, nature and the environment around you or that you create yourself. I often see an art piece and think, Wow! I love those colors or textures or that vibe and from there I get into my studio and start creating. Walks through nature, especially the beach, the ocean are huge inspiration. My art studio is above a koi pond and has a garden outside of it. Just being in my studio makes me want to bring beautiful vibes onto canvas. The biggest obstacle in the way of learning more is time.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I don’t know initially why I started to create art on canvases. I just woke up one day with this yearning to start creating it. As I look back I think about how my father and I had so much fun every Christmas season painting our living room windows with holiday scenes. I was an elementary school teacher for 27 years and throughout my career I created murals on the walls of my classroom and even the school library using painted cut out objects and stuffed butcher paper. I also worked with another teacher writing and drawing our own books for our students to supplement our curriculum for our students. I think subconsciously I’ve always been an individual that needed to create art to become my best version of myself.
Once I started on my journey of creating art on canvas I found myself wanting to create pieces that brought a zen vibe to the environment. It is my belief that art is something that you enjoy looking at, being around, it enhances your space. I currently have art for sale in all sizes and I create custom pieces as well. I like to create art that speaks to clients as well as work with clients to customize a piece for their home, office, or any space really. I like working with people on the size of canvas, colors, textures, vibe that suites their environment. I enjoy having them be a part of the process as the art is being made in phases. I use acrylic paint with glaze and often add texture. I also like to incorporate decoupage and stencils into pieces. I think art becomes extra special when you personally know the artist and even more so when you’ve had some influence on the art they create for you. What I am most proud of is getting positive feedback from clients. I have had clients express how much joy my art has brought into their home. I even had one client that has claimed certain pieces of my art help heal her just by having it in view as she recovered from a serious health condition. My main goal in creating art is to enhance others’ living spaces.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I am a big fan of Louise Hay. I admire all the people she has touched with her uplifting messages and beautifully written books, affirmations and meditations. One of my favorite quotes from her is “Every person, place and thing on this planet is interconnected with love”. My mission driving my creative journey is to interconnect people with uplifting art. In my eyes art should be something you love to look at. It can create many emotions and can enhance the vibe of any space. I surround myself with a visual space that brings peace and a zen vibe. This vibe emerges from the canvas art I bring to life.
This world is full of so many challenges with careers, family and social obligations and just trying to get everything done you need to do in one day. I think it is important with all of our challenges/responsibilities that we remember to pause, breathe, take in some beauty, feel good vibes. My mission is to provide this in the form of art. I hope my art speaks to you, inspires you and brings good energy into your life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is bringing joy to other people. Art can create a positive environment, help create your own personal sanctuary. It feels good to spend many hours, creating, redoing, touching up, etc on a piece and have the end result be something meaningful to someone else. I love to enhance their environment and overall mood with the art I bring into their lives.
