Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tiffany Lightfoot. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tiffany, thanks for joining us today. Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.
Everyone loves to customize everything from choosing the color of your car’s interior to recreating your favorite drink at Starbucks. I’ve been designing cakes for 16 years and although cakes and cupcakes are created with cake and frosting as the base, I thought customers should have more options available.
I created a retail custom boutique bakery where you can build your own cupcake. We call it our Flavor to Frills process, where you can decide a cake flavor, a filling, choose your favorite frosting and then top it all with drizzles and toppings “The Frills”. This process creates endless combinations to a classic treat.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Tiffany Lightfoot, founder and cake artist of My Cake Theory. I turned a hobby into an entrepreneurial journey in 2008. While balancing my life as a single mom and working in hospitality and event management, I found time to teach myself the art of baking.
I think I found my sweet spot and began creating delicious, multidimensional cakes with impeccable details using my training in clothing design I learned at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
I’ve been able to live out my passion by creating unique flavors matched with artistic design for all occasions adding a special touch and lasting memory for my clientele.
Living out my dream has aloud me to meet so many great people and have some the most amazing experiences. I never thought I would become a Food Network Champion being on multiple food shows on a major network which is the same network I watched to learn some of my design skills.
How did you build your audience on social media?
In the beginning stages of my business I didn’t have a website, but I had Facebook. Not realizing how important it was to show my work, I posted because I was in love with every design. I’m not sure if how many customers I gained posting pictures of everything I created back then, but it’s helped me a lot in recent years.
Although we have a website today that gets decent traffic, it’s the social media platforms that old and new clients are constantly mentioning when they visit or call.
People eat with their eyes, so it’s important to show clients publicly what they are missing which makes them want to visit our bakery.
We chose to grow our pages organically and we went from 100 followers to over 11k in a little less than a year after we opened the retail store.
People are creatures of habit, we are constantly checking social media therefore if you want to be seen you have to post.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I worked a full time job while being an entrepreneur part time for about 11years.
It took someone else that believed in me 100 percent and encouraged me to full time entrepreneurship almost 5 years ago even though I kept saying I would focus on my dream for over a decade.
It takes a lot of courage, confidence and support to be an entrepreneur. Although I loved my hospitality job, I wanted to grow a career.
