Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tiffany Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tiffany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
Gratitude fills my heart as I reflect on my journey as an artist thus far. I owe a tremendous debt of thanks to Angie Dougherty, Starbucks Store Manager at Hampton Inn & Suites in Downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Through her kindness, I was able to debut my work in her store during May and June of 2023. This was the first time my work was on display to the public and where I sold my first painting.
At my artist’s reception hosted at The Hampton Inn & Suites, I had the pleasure of meeting Rhianna Bowyer, a phenomenal portrait artist and now a cherished friend. Rhianna curates the Artists Alley show during First Fridays at Mission Taco Joint in the Crossroads—a well-known artist community in Kansas City. Rhianna’s constant encouragement and support have opened many doors for me, providing a platform to sell my artwork and handmade jewelry to local KC art lovers.
The camaraderie within our tight-knit community has added richness to my artistic journey. Reflecting on the friendships formed and the opportunities that continue to unfold, I remain grateful for the support that has allowed me to contribute and share as an artist in my community.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For over three decades, I’ve been a self-taught artist, but it wasn’t until the pandemic hit that I truly embraced my craft and started to take things seriously. From painting to paper crafting, jewelry-making, and now sewing, I’ve explored various creative outlets. My focus today is creating abstract acrylic paintings because it allows me to express myself authentically, free from constraints or expectations. I’m sure my style will evolve and I’ll continue to dabble in different techniques over time. I prefer to keep an open mind as a creative.
Regardless of the medium, I want my art to serve as an escape, inviting viewers to experience a moment of calm without the burden of overthinking. I want them to be drawn into the layers, creating a meditative pause.
What makes me unique is my refusal to be confined to a single style. I’m not bound to one lane; I aspire to captivate a diverse audience by continually expanding into different mediums. As humans evolve through experiences, so does my art. I believe people resonate with this idea of constant growth and change.
I’m incredibly grateful for those who have supported me in my journey. My husband, family, friends and all of the artists in my life continue to uplift and inspire me. At times, I’ve questioned my place in the art world as a self-taught artist. Yet, I find inspiration in the fact that my journey can motivate others. You don’t need formal education or “professional” training to pursue your passions—just dive in and go for it!

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Non-creatives often gravitate towards rules and patterns, seeking recognizable elements in art. However, my work purposefully defies those constraints. Rules, while offering structure, can also limit and breed feelings of inadequacy. I’ve encountered the notion that “anyone can make abstract art,” and while true, I believe it’s a misconception. Abstract art is challenging because it lacks rigid rules; it requires creation from a space of complete freedom. A blank canvas can be quite intimidating and I never really know what the finished piece will look like. There’s also the challenge of knowing when to keep adding to a piece and when to stop.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love having the freedom to express myself and witnessing personal growth reflected in my work. Creating something tangible in this world serves as a visible testament to that growth—each piece is evidence of my journey. When others connect with my paintings, I feel like I’ve added something positive to their journey as well.
