We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tiffany Johnson . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tiffany below.
Tiffany , appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I feel like for me there was never a specific moment where I knew I wanted to pursue music, it was just always something I did. Growing up my dad was in a band so from a young age I was introduced to music and performing. As a little kid I loved to sing and make up little songs, but it wasn’t until I was about 8 years old when I actually learned how to write songs. Even to this day I write music just to process my own feelings and to tell stories. I am obsessed with taking a moment in life, or a feeling and being able to put that into words and into music. It’s just the most magical thing.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who are just getting to know me, my name is Tiffany Johnson and I am a writer/artist. I grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota and have been doing music ever since I can remember. I recently moved to Nashville to pursue music full time. My first ever look into the music industry was when I was 7 years old. Back in South Dakota, about an hour away from my hometown there is a music festival called The Wild West Songwriter’s Fest. Artists, writers, A&Rs, publishers and other people from the industry would come to this festival every year. I remember one of the first years I attended, I got to go to writer’s rounds where the songwriters on stage were singing hits I had heard on the radio. I remember thinking, “wow this is a real job people get to do everyday”. I have now attended this festival 11 years and this past year I was honored to play in rounds with some of Nashville’s hit writers. It’s such a unique and beautiful thing that my music Industry journey all started back in South Dakota.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is definitely connecting with fans, or more so friends as I see it. I write music as a coping mechanism, as a way to understand my own thoughts, so when these 3 minute pieces of my brain can make someone feel understood, less alone, comforted or seen, that is what I truly love. I make music as a friend for myself when I feel like no one else understands, so if my music can be that friend for someone else as well that’s all that really matters. I love connecting with other people online, through dms, at shows etc and for me that’s what it’s all about.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the most important thing is just showing up and supporting your local art scene. Go to the concerts, festivals, art fairs, back yard concerts, writers rounds etc, and if you can’t do that support artists online. Share the art with your friends and family and be active on artists social media pages. There are so many people in Nashville who help keep it magical and thriving. Giving art a space to been seen/heard is something that is so sacred and helps a community to come together more than many people realize.
