We were lucky to catch up with Tiffany Jamison recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffany , appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I could not be happier as a business owner, not just for the flexibility and 100% improved work-life-balance, but for the endless opportunities for my business.
After 15 years of working for marketing agencies, and brands and retailers across the world, I started my own business. I’m at an advantage of being able to apply all I’ve learned (good and bad), to my own business. For years I watched agency owners and leadership offer the latest trends they thought clients would want. They did this without knowledge on how to execute to the strategy and also without 100% believing in what they were doing.
Since the inception of my business three years ago, I’ve stayed true to who we are as a brand, and worked only with clients that were like-minded in strategy, goals and growth. This has catapulted us into opportuinties beyond our dreams.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been in the marketing industry for over 15 years. I have always focused on creating omnichannel strategies for brands of all sizes and in multiple categories.
After graduating from college, I initially wanted to head to law school. I took a job right away to give myself a study break. I worked for a Fortune 500 company as a marketing executive; the rest is history.
When a client contacts Jamison Communications, they usually have the problem of outdated marketing strategies, growing pains they can’t keep up with, or their current efforts not converting as they need. Our process is to conduct a detailed audit on all marketing efforts. When we have the opportunity, we also like to have a focus group with the in-house marketing team, other partner agencies and the executive brand team. Doing this allows us to really get the root of what needs to be done.
This process is not something we charge the client for. It sets us apart that we do this. We are willing to put these costs back to our own agency because the end result allows for us to know if we are a good fit for what the brand needs, and also develop a strategic plan with realistic costs and a timeline. We don’t have the mindset that we want to get the most clients we can, we have the mindset that we want to get the right clients.
Curently, I am most proud of my work with BIKE Athletic. BIKE is a men’s apparel brand that was owned by the Russell Brand. Rusell let the BIKE brand go dormant, and then private shareholders bought the brand, and brought Jamison Communications on board to help bring BIKE to life. The BIKE team is comprised of hardworking, idea-generating doers, it has been amazing working with the brand.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Managing and maintaining a happy team is one of the most essential things for any business. Business owners often let this fall to the side when business picks up.
My team feels valued, has flexibility, is introduced to other brands they can work with, and is always brought in on client brainstorms and audits so they can add their expertise and value from the start.
When I worked for other agencies, the executive team frequently brought me in on projects and processes creation to help build company morale and keep teams strong and performing. I learned how to communicate across multiple departments and talents and what not to do as I led my team.
My current team works remotely, some out of state. My team is comprised of talented high-performers dedicated to growing business with me. We are all an essential piece of the puzzle. I could not have my business without them.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My business has been built mainly through word of mouth: clients, peers, and past employers. When a prospect contacts us, they immediately reference the reputation that Jamison Communications has in the industry.
One thing that makes Jamison Communications stand apart is that we perform a channel audit of a brand’s current marketing efforts (before they sign a contract!). We do this at no cost to the prospect. Our process is thorough and includes a focus group with the internal marketing team and executive team and many times, we survey the target audience of the brand.
What makes us stand apart is that if we are not the right fit for a prospect (or vice versa), we decline the opportunity. Many agencies out there just focus on filling the pipeline, and not always with the right clients. We love to refer to other agencies if we are not a good fit. There is enough business for everyone.
