We recently connected with Tiffany Harrison and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffany , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I’ve always had the dream to open and operate my own gymnastics club. The idea of making it a reality jumped around a lot throughout the past couple of years. With the overwhelming support from my husband, family, and team, we took the opportunity to bring it to life this Summer. From there, we secured a building, invested in equipment from various sources to get us started, and created our brand name, “Emerald Coast Elite Gymnastics”.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve been involved in the gymnastics world for 22 years. My experience began with recreational/beginner gymnastics going through to competing at the highest level – level 10. Once I retired as a gymnast, I transferred to coaching and judging for the sport and now, an owner.
Our gymnastics club offers programs for children from age 2-18. This includes our preschool program, recreational, tumbling, and team. Gymnastics is the best sport for children to participate in. It strengthens kids cognitively, physically, in their coordination, flexibility, motor skills and is the ultimate foundation for any sport. I’ve worked really hard in developing my curriculum, along with continuing my education, and take huge pride in how it has received a ton of positive feedback.
Additional services we offer are birthday parties, fun nights, and we are starting skill clinics soon for those who want extra focus on a particular skill.
My team program has been one of the biggest blessings in developing my own business. They are a huge contributing factor in the success we’ve had in our short time of being open and I’m forever grateful for these families and their support. Our team kids spend anywhere from 9 hours to 15 hours a week training. The amount of dedication and hard work they invest is always so impressive for such young athletes. I’m so proud to be their coach.
Gymnastics is a very competitive sport that is known for seeking perfection. Although perfection is how these kids are judged, I don’t put so much value on the perfection side. I want each child to be challenged, feel successful, and have the opportunity to grow as much as they can and want to within this sport – even if it isn’t perfect. At the end of the day, I want them to feel accomplished in what they put on the floor – however that is defined to them.
Our vision is: “We want to foster confidence and integrity through gymnastics that will lead to success beyond our sport.”
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Thankfully, the sport I grew up in is vastly different than what it is now. One of the biggest lessons I had to relearn is caring for the gymnasts body. This includes appropriate stretching techniques, safe landings, and listening to their bodies. This is a hard sport that inevitably causes injuries or some pain from time to time. Prioritizing health wasn’t “a thing” growing up and I continually learn to keep athletes as safe as I can.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe we’re still establishing our reputation, but I’ve been fortunate to receive a lot of positive feedback thus far. I believe the effort my coaches and I put into this program is appreciated and admired by our kids and parents.
