Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tiffany Hale Carter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tiffany , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned about interior design from my family. My mom and grandma could make any space feel warm and inviting. My aunt and uncle could make any space feel luxurious. I never knew interior design was a career because the people around me always did it so naturally.
I actually discovered the field of interior design in a space planning class. I went on to study at two of the most well-respected colleges in my state and earned both my Bachelor and Master of Interior Design. I also studied Biophiic Design extensively and earn LEED accreditation.
Interior design is my second career. If I knew then what I know now, I would have studied interior design my. first time around as a student at the University of Alabama. Roll Tide!
The skills that are most essential as an interior designer are the ability to really listen closely and intently, versatility, being quick on your feet, and the desire to be absolutely committed to protecting the life, safety and welfare of your end users.
Lots of obstacles have stood in the way of my development as an interior designer. It’s a lot more difficult to carve out time for learning when you have a family. It can also be mentally draining to deal with the complexities of a lack of representation. It comes with the territory, but I find ways to push through. If I didn’t absolutely love what I do, I would have given up a long time ago. So, commitment is big. You also have to be committed to be an interior designer.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m most passionate about the part of design that rarely gets the glitz and glamour: the science and psychology of interior design.
For me, it’s more than creating beautiful spaces. I create beautiful spaces that also support your overall physical and mental health.
Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that we spend about 90% of our time inside built environments? Think about it. Your house, car, job, doctor’s appointments, social settings…most of them are indoors. That’s mind-blowing, right?!
Once I discovered that fact, I really took a deep dive into studying Biophilic Design. When designing spaces, I use my expertise of Biophilic Design to go far beyond simply adding plants to a space. I design spaces that consciously and subconsciously do things like reduce stress levels, improve moods and productivity, increase test scores in classrooms and expedite healing times in healthcare settings.
So, I do love creating beautiful spaces! However, I’m most proud when I create spaces that people can stay in for hours and hours and still feel happy and healthy.
As for design services, my company has primarily concentrated on two primary areas: medial practices & spas and dormitories. In medical spaces, our design style is incredibly beneficial to people that feel worried and/or stressed. In dormitories, we offer solutions to the challenge of supporting both living and learning in a small space.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One of my biggest missions is to change the face of doctor’s offices and other medical spaces.
When you think about a those types of spaces, what comes to mind? Beige walls? Hard chairs? Boring artwork? Am I right? You probably start feeling tense just thinking about it. I know I do!
My mission is to change all of that. There’s absolutely no reason why we should enter a space that already makes us feel uneasy, only have our surroundings add to it and have us stressed before we even get to see the doctor. It’s no wonder why we often can’t remember what he or she said. Lol!
I intend to create spaces that blur the line between medical and residential while respecting the needs of those receiving treatment and those providing it.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
This is actually pretty funny.
Before I became a professional interior designer, I loved watching home improvement shows on tv. I used to think interior design was just such a glamours thing. I would often watch makeover reveals and think, “Wow! They transform an entire house overnight. I can’t wait to do that!”
Well, my very first design class, I had to do lots of math and the most tedious hand drafting you can ever imagine. Lol! I could not believe it. Hand drafting a dining chair almost took me out. As a mater of fact, lots of my classmates dropped the class and changed their major. Needless to say, I very quickly realized that I was not going to be transforming houses overnight.
I don’t watch those shows anymore.
