Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tiffany Green-Hood. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tiffany, thanks for joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
In 2017, I decided to move to Atlanta with my boyfriend. There was no planning, no financial preparation, it was pretty much a spur of the moment decision. I had a hard time find a job in my respect field of mental health. The jobs I did find were paying 75 percent less than what I was use to making. I’d already had years of supporting authors in the publishing industry and knew something’s myself about how to self publish your own book. The early pre of 2017, I’d published my first author. It was a book of poetry. I designed the cover and published it with one of the largest print and distribution company’s in the world, so the book was available wherever books are sold. I did find a few jobs but it was frustrating knowing this was not in the plan and not what I was called to do. One day I decided to go live on Periscope and talk about the benefits of self publishing. I’d already had a following across social media so I wasn’t new to the idea of live streaming. This is what ignited me starting my own publishing company. I started with no followers and starting gaining followers and people started asking what I charged to publish books. I started at $500 and it was up from there. Soon after I gained my first consultation client at $1500. This was consulting only for a children’s book.. To this date he has been on TV numerous times and sold thousands of books and gained big contracts with schools to purchase his books and allow his to speak. In 2024 I can say I’ve published 6 books of my own and published over 60 authors. My biggest challenge in this was that I knew I could accomplish anything I put my mind to. I build my own confidence up and it was no turning back. In 2020 I bought my batch of ISBN numbers and I’ve been working my business full time every since. I enjoy and love what I do. 2023 allowed me to gain lifetime clients that have me on standby. Some have book my services annually to make sure they continue to have the quality service I provide for their brands and businesses. Building my business is a major part of my life and I would not change that for anything.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For years I’d seen African American authors who were published but they were missing the branding aspect of their business. This is why I focus heavy on branding and design. You can have an amazing book and have a horrible book cover. So I became the publisher that brands your entire business. I also coach and educate my clients. Many times authors publish a book and then have no idea how to sell it or what to do with the book. It’s like “Now What”. And then they meet me. I have no problem telling authors they need a new cover or a new book title or both. I feel like we have no room to show up looking mediocre. It’s either all or none. I like to say I teach authors the business of publishing. There are lot of book coaches and publishers but they don’t all educate. I need my client to know when they leave me how much power they have created by publishing a book. The days of waiting for someone to give you a book deal are null and void for the average person. Self publishing to me is a huge benefit and a million dollar gift.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my business before social media existed. I hatred my own social website membership on a site called Ning. This was before Facebook. I had about 500 members and it was completely free to join and create your own profile and network. I didn’t know what I had at the time and eventually lost the site. When Facebook came along I still didn’t half way know what I was doing but I showed up. I also started my own blog talk radio show and interviewed authors, song writers and music artists. In 2006 I started my own wedding photography company and had my own studio in the south loop of downtown Chicago. This was fun and mind blowing for me. I kept the studio for a year and went mobile after that but I made a lot of history in photography as well as the blog talk radio show. My advice to business owners is to utilize social media to triple their profits. Everyone is on social media. Make sure you are building an email list and marketing who you are and what you do.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, my goal is to build generational wealth for my children’s children. My parental struggled financially and I picked up where they left off. Life was different back then. This is why I use all the option of technology I have to create money opportunities and it works for me every time. I look at some of these entrepreneurs now days and it’s sad, because no one has to struggle financially if they don’t want to. I would say to them you don’t have to struggle, sell digital products, use your voice and do speaking engagements, there is no limit.
