Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tiffany Franklin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tiffany, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I definitely have been able to earn a full time living from being a full time professional makeup artist. It hasn’t always been easy to gain clientele in the beauty industry. I’m in a field where it’s forever evolving and growing. Since 2006 my ultimate love for cosmetics has grown into a passion to work full time one day. I’ve worked job after job in hopes to one day leave the nine to five. I started off practicing on family and friends and then I advanced to getting comfortable doing the service. My prices were super low as $15 for a full face of makeup. I made sure I offered a prestigious service that’s worth paying for. So 17 years of on and off work in the field and working my part time makeup artist job/ hobby. I’ve worked for the government, healthcare, and retail. None of them satisfied me enough to pursue. I went to college in 2002 to 2004 then 2007 to 2009. All those years I built a clientele. People believed in me even when I wanted to give up. In 2016 I was fired from my job which led me to being a full time makeup artist. It isn’t an easy task but I enjoy my job. I’ve hit highs and lows but hasn’t waived my faith in God. I continue to work towards a millionaire mindset. I want to help build a massive clientele to serve worldwide.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a full time professional makeup artist of 17 years residing in Houston, Texas. I provide beauty services to clientele locally and internationally. I service clients with makeup application, permanent brow services, airbrush makeup, makeup classes, theatre art, and a mentoring program. I started in 2006 as a free lance makeup artist. I attended college for fashion design for 3 years but that soon turned into a crossover to beauty services. In 2016, I created a cosmetic makeup line which consisted of face products such as lip sticks, eyeshadow palettes, and body shimmers! Tema Cosmetics stands for Tiffani Eyez Makeup Artistry! Providing beauty services is a lifestyle that I built upon and this created an artistry that would change the world. As a makeup artist I can gladly say that I enjoy every aspect of the business and there is never dull moment. I was featured on My 600 Pound Life as the makeup artist for Roshanda Perrio. A great opportunity that was presented to me and I’m proud of this accomplishment. Today my clients are CEOs, celebrities, corporate and lovable people; men and women who want serious advice on how to do their makeup, or how to put together bold and trendy looks. During the summer each year I train small and beginner businesses training on how to grow, market, and develop their business. My main focus is to also add to my company with skilled individuals that can perform beauty services.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my view I feel like society can do to support artists is by giving us the chance to gain a financial backing. We often are referred to as being the help instead of being recognized as a professional. I’ve personally applied to so many grants/loans and can’t get approved. When Covid hit it was so devastating and depressing. Money was funny for me and I’ve tried all avenues to financially survive. I may not know why I wasn’t approved to get funding but I feel that this beauty business is not taken seriously. I’ve poured out story after story of my desperate need for funding. So with the society of banks and approvals for funding we as makeup artist want to be approved or granted funds to continue our business. We need products to be replenished so we can keep a Covid free environment.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of this business is the people and ministry. I’ve had so many walks of life enter my world. It’s an amazing feeling to know people trust me to make them feel beautiful. I can pray for them as well and give a glam slam. With God as the head of my life I want to continue to pour into my clients as they pour into me.
