We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiffany Dyba a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
Right now, it is a candidate’s market even though we are seeing more layoffs and downsizing from organizations due to the state of the economy. It is an interesting place to be in as candidates are still seeking high salaries, and there’s also an uncertainty about joining a new organization given the state of the world.
Tiffany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have a long background in recruiting, but most recently before I went off on my own I worked in fashion recruiting and leading teams for brands like Burberry and Tiffany & Co. I had an amazing ride and yet something was still missing. After working with a career coach at the beginning of 2017, I determined that I wanted more balance and more creativity in my work. And so, Tiffany Dyba Coaching and Consulting was born. I began my new career really focused on helping others pivot their careers into a more meaningful one. My business has since evolved into working alongside leaders at high growth startups looking to hire and scale. Whether it is hiring for a tough to fill leadership role, or helping to put hiring practices and process in place, I have done it all! It has been really rewarding to be back in recruiting on my terms working with really exciting brands and organizations. I was featured and profiled in the New York Times earlier this year on the state of hiring in tech, and I am super proud of that!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Six months after I left my full time corporate job to start my own business, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. On the one hand, I was happy to have my own schedule to really focus my energy on healing, and surgery, and treatment. On the other, I was just starting out and if I wasn’t working, I wasn’t making money. The diagnosis really put into perspective what mattered most. My healing and my health. As I continued to focus my attention on that, the right clients and opportuntiies just sort of fell into. place.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Saying yes to everything. When I was first starting out, I admit I approached my business at times from a place of scarcity. I wasn’t sure when the next opportunity would come, and so I would constantly say yes to things even if they didn’t excite me or feel like they were worth it. I would then find myself frustrated afterwards wondering why I said yes, because these things proved to not help me grow or be worth my time. It was a lesson I had to learn. Now I am so much more comfortable with who I am as a professional and business owner, as well as personally. I only say yes to things that make me feel good, and because of that, the right things now keep landing.
