We were lucky to catch up with Tiffany Clayton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffany, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I have always dreamed of being a candle shop owner catering to like minded individuals who practice witchcraft and who are guided by their spiritual beliefs. Sage is my favorite herb and satin is my favorite type of material. The idea came from my great grandmother who practiced Voodoo and she used to grow, sell and bundle sage wrapped in satin cloths. She always encouraged me to open a curio shop or botanica and call it Sage & Satin.

Tiffany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Tiffany Clayton, and I was born and raised in Northern California. I am a mom to an awesome 12 year old son who has Autism and he is my business partner.
What sets me apart from others is that I am genuinely me and it shows in my work as a candle maker and herbalist. I live everyday knowing that I can help others improve their well-being through scent and herbs. I don’t oversell, my products speak for themselves. I strive to help others realize and reach their full potential with magical scents and herbs.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot to make the transition from working full time in coporate america to quitting my job and and trusting my ancestors and spirit guides to work for myself. I put my goals in place and quit. It was scary at first because I felt selfish, I felt like I might fail and let my son down. None of that happened. I am so proud that I learned a lot about myself, and how to trust that my God and ancestors would carry me, and they did!

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My Co founder is my son Gregory. I wanted to instill in him a work ethic that taught him how to be a responsible young man. Since my son was diagnosed with Autism at age 8, I realized that his journey in life might not be a walk in the park. I have already seen and experienced discrimination against others are treated when they have a diagnosis of some sort of disability. I just wanted to prepare him how to provide for himself, if no one would ever hire my son for any reason. He will have his business to turn to, and hopefully employ other indivuduals with special needs. He really enjoys planning and creating new scents or molds. I give him the creative space to make Sage and satin more than just a candle shop. We have big plans coming soon for the special needs community. Greogry have wrote up a nice business plan and he wants to open a juice bar,and candle bar for kids just like him.
