We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tiffany Blue. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tiffany below.
Tiffany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Attention To Detail Barber Studio was named because I pay attention to the detail of the clients needs, as well as I want people to start paying attention to detail in life. We often miss out on things or even fail at a task because we fail to pay attention to the details of the task at hand. Paying attention to detail no matter the task will allow us to be more effective with greater chances of succeeded in said task
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a rising 9th grader enjoying family reunion in the south, I discovered my cousin Karlis cutting one of our cousins. Karlis noticed me watching and invited me over to cut another cousin hair. I instantly fell in love with barbering. Throughout high school I would continue to line up my cousins and friends but never actually cutting the hair as I was afraid of messing up. Years later Karlis youngest brother Khris called me over to his house to line him up. But when I got there he insisted I cut his hair as well. After attempting a few nervous strokes across Khris’ head he snatches the clippers away from me yelling, “It’s only hair! It’ll grow back!” As he cuts his own hair haha. Khris insisted I find a way into barber school seeing he knows I want to get fully into it and believes in me. Maybe a month after that Khris passes away, and prior to his death Karlis passed away about 6 months before.
The faith my cousins had for me made me want to be good at barbering. But when I finally got into to barber school and had graduated, I quickly noticed how most barbers I encountered only cared about cutting the clients hair yet a lot of clients were having ingrown hair issues on their face and had no idea why. Having those bumps that ingrowns cause have some men insecure about how they look. I wanted to be a barber who showed that it’s okay for men to care about their skin. So I began offering skincare services such as ingrown hair services as well as facials
Being a female barber already has me standing out in the industry. Adding skincare and haircare services (hair loss prevention) sets me apart from all others mainly because my efforts in helping shows I actually care and are passionate about what I do. I am also most proud that I don’t allow the trends of the industry to change me, ie using color fibers to enhance haircuts or hiking prices just because. I stay true to myself and it definitely shows in my shop.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
2020 was an extremely pivotal time for me not only with my business, but also in my life. I lost my mother on her birthday in November, and while I’m on the east coast preparing to bury my mother, I also learned that barbershops were being forced to close for the 3rd time in the year. Mind you, I just moved to San Diego from the east coast in December 2019 so I was still trying building my clientele. Once back on the west coast, I learned that I would be homeless in a little over 30 days.
Being a business owner who has not worked for anyone in at least 8-9 years. I had to get a couple jobs. My faith was being tested and gratefully instead of having to move out of state or stay in my car, God made a way and I had a roof over my head thanks to VVSD. For 2 months I worked my butt off with those 2 jobs while also being able to open my barbershop up again and with more blessings I was able to land my own apartment.
Throughout those 6 months of adversity, I had become depressed and stressed the most I’ve ever had to encounter my entire life. Yet I remained hopeful and had faith that God will see me through. Here I am now, very grateful to say my business is still flourishing and I still have my apartment.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During the pivotal time I encountered in 2020, I also had to illustrate resilience because some associates I was acquainted with upon moving to California were trying to destroy my name. Despite knowing someone was attempting to slander my name all over social media, I still had a business to run.
I created my own business cards, flyers, social media page, etc and worked endlessly on getting clients in my shop as well as returning. Although I’m not where I want to be, I am happy with where I’ve came from and know that I am heading.
