We recently connected with Tiffany Bausch Weld and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffany, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I’ve designed jewelry for large retailers in NYC for over 15 years. I learned valuable lessons about the jewelry industry and how to build a brand. Working with talented designers and creators inspired me to dream bigger and I always knew one day I would launch my own brand. In 2020, the saying, “the time is right now” became my motto. I built my inspiration wall, hanging images that vibed with the brand identity I was exploring. I pulled colors, fabrics, plants and started down the rabbit hole of esoteric teachings, hermeticism, gnostics, ancient civilizations and sacred geometry. I know how to build a collection through an established brand filter but when it came to figuring out who is Tiffany Bausch Weld, who is Fiore Wylde…that was scary, exciting, challenging and intoxicating all at one. My meditation practice was an important tool during this process. Exploring my inner space is still one of my favorite daily rituals.
After about 8 months, I began working with a production team in NYC and produced my first three collections for the Fiore Wylde brand, Intent, Fedish, Sundrop.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Through my research of ancient cultures, hermetic principals, and botany, I aim to reconnect the modern human to the elements and rhythm of the earth while simultaneously honoring the ancient traditions of adornment to channel inner wisdom and connection to source.
I work in 18k gold and hand carved gemstones as well as, ceramic porcelain sculptures and digital collage. Through these mediums, I weave together eclectic shapes and sculptural elements to capturing the movement of energy, earth’s innate wisdom, lost knowledge, and the power of intention.
I’m a naturalist, intoxicated by planet Earth, the Sun and Space. Honoring each by collecting curiosities and attuning to both the seen and unseen elements surrounding our everyday.
As a Reiki master, I study energy and sound healing. I honor our ability to synchronize our frequency with the natural world through our thoughts, intentions, and the spoken word. Each piece in the collection is designed with meaning and the energy of each item is made neutral and clear. This is ideal for the customer to create their initial positive connection with their new treasure.
As a child, Fiore, my grandfather, the namesake for my brand, taught me how to drill tiny holes into rocks, shells and sticks and string them onto cord, making my first pieces of jewelry. Art and Jewelry making was sealed into my very being from that time forward.
Before launching Fiore Wylde, I spent my more than a decade in New York City designing and directing the design of jewelry for many brands including, Ippolita, Banana Republic, Club Monaco, Alexis Bittar, and Larkspur & Hawk. I love my background in both fine and fashion jewelry. It brings a unique perspective what is and is not fine jewelry. I don’t follow the rules. Ultimately the customer decides.
I currently live in Colorado with my Husband, our two boys and a dog.
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
Working with 18k gold is expensive and as I build the business, every month is a challenge. The market has changed and many if not all jewelry boutiques want to sell a new brand on consignment first to see if the brand performs. This is challenging if you are not working with capital. It means I need to pay for many sets of gold samples upfront so the store can “test the brand”. This can be discouraging. I don’t have the capital so it’s slow going, building inventory one piece at a time and manifesting opportunity one day at a time.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
I manufacture my collection in NYC, Thailand, and India. I use a luxury dream team in New York that is very talented and In Thailand I manufacture with an all women owned an operated team with great ethics. In India, I use some of the best stone carvers in the country. Be honest, be upfront, dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s. This industry can be amazing and it can also be a bit shady so know your stuff going in. Best advise: own your CAD’s. Never let your manufacture keep them from you.
