We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiffany Anderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffany, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
Since day one, my parents have always been my biggest supporters. They instilled in me a sense of pride in my work, and they’ve always encouraged me to shoot for the stars.
My mom read to me everyday growing up. I devoured books alongside her that were above my reading level and learned a wealth of vocabulary. Our times reading together are some of my favorite memories from my childhood.
When I was in 9th grade, I was consistently making Cs and Ds in my English class. Grammar didn’t make sense to me as I struggled with commas, subject/verb agreement, and a myriad of other things. My parents both knew I had the capability to do better so they challenged me by helping me with my homework until I started becoming confident in my writing skills.
Additionally, they spoke with one of my English teachers who took extra time out of her schedule to walk me through my grammar frustrations.
There are so many stories I could tell about how they loved me and pushed me to be a better version of myself. But I’ll suffice it to say that every step of my journey, my parents have been there cheering me on.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
At my core, I’ve always been a writer.
I would write stories on my huge desktop computer when I was little, and my mom would save all of them. When I wasn’t glued to the computer, I would carry around a small tape recorder and tell stories to listen back to later. The idea and movement of story has always fascinated me.
After college, I was nannying and slowly burning out and needed a creative outlet again. I was still writing, but it wasn’t in the ways I wanted. My father in law loaned me a book called “The Copywriter’s Handbook” and I tore into it and realized this was right up my alley. Copy was drastically different from the creative fiction I adore, so I took free classes, asked friends to let me do little side gigs for them, and poured my heart into learning all I could.
Seven years later, I’ve found my “groove” so to speak – I specialize in long-form content including website content, long-form articles, blogs, newsletters, white papers, case studies, and everything in between. My clients use my services to engage with their ideal audience and save themselves time so they can do what they do best. At the heart of my business is an enormous amount of empathy and love for my people: my clients mean everything to me. I work to connect with each of them and believe in “people over profit” every single time.
I’m proud of my business that started with just an idea and has grown into a full-service, one-woman show providing my clients with peace of mind and content they’re proud to show their readers. Working with me means you have another pair of eyes on your content, a helping hand when you’ve read the same paragraph 37 times, and a listening ear when you need an industry specialist.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I’ve been fortunate over the past seven years to work alongside amazing people. Through these partnerships and business relationships, I’ve found most of my new clients come via word of mouth and referral.
I work hard to create a highly communicative relationship with both current and past clients. Relationships mean a lot to me, and I always want my clients to feel like they mean the world to me (because they do!)
Once you’re in my client roster, you’re part of my copywriting family!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
This is the story of how I almost gave up.
I was three years into my business when I onboarded a new client who wanted new website content. I was working with her website developer and was creating content from scratch. Against my better judgement (and a lesson worth noting), I gave her a significant discount since she was struggling with her practice.
Within two weeks, the website designer and I had some beautiful mockups ready for her to review and made a note to tell her multiple times this wasn’t the finished draft. After reviewing the work, she asked if I’d be available for a call later that week to discuss next steps. I was thrilled to hear her thoughts on the website so far, and eagerly looked forward to our call.
The next day, I was co-working with a friend at a coffee shop when my client called me. Without warning, she starts berating, yelling, and calling me a fraud. I was speechless and sat on the phone for a few minutes with tears streaming down my face. She wouldn’t give me a second chance, she didn’t give me any indication of why she was upset, she just kept saying “It’s not what I wanted.”
She hung up on me without giving me a chance to speak. I sat in that coffee shop and sobbed, I was heartbroken. Especially for someone who loves her work and puts her all into it, it broke me. In that moment I thought “I’m not built for this. I’m not doing this anymore.”
About fifteen minutes after that call, I had a meeting with another client who was also a friend. She saw the upset in my face and asked what happened. I spilled my guts and she gave me the biggest hug while saying, “Oh but she doesn’t know how much you’ve done for other businesses. She has no idea the mistake she made – you help people.”
That small conversation made me realize I couldn’t give up. Other people saw me and recognized how much I help their business. I wasn’t going to stop because one person couldn’t see the forest for the trees.
Giving up wasn’t an option.
