We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tiffani Beck. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tiffani below.
Tiffani, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Every painting I have the opportunity to create is so special and meaningful. I work with the client to make their vision come to life. I send out a questionnaire to my live painting couples and let them tell me the scene they’d like painted, the people (if any other than themselves) they’d like included and any other requests they have. I work tirelessly to capture the magic of their day and the joy it brings everyone (including myself) is just the cherry on top of their perfect wedding.
My live painting has been a gift to several of my couples from family members which is always so sweet. One in particular I will never forget was from the bride’s siblings. The groom’s father had just passed away before the wedding and I was able to add him from a photo, along with the groom’s mother and bride’s parents in the background of the painting. I still tear up thinking about it today.
Tiffani, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an artist who reluctantly fell into the wonderful world of Live Event Painting. I had been painting oil commissions from photos since high school and although I had an art degree, I was working a 9-5 office job in 2020, when a childhood friend reached out about me possibly painting her wedding.. LIVE. I was absolutely terrified and totally intimidated by the opportunity but I knew in my heart it was something I shouldn’t pass up. I am SO glad I chose to take a chance and that my sweet friend trusted me because I have been live painting weddings ever since and truly hope to never stop.
For those who are unfamiliar, as a live wedding painter, I show up to the event the day of and paint any scene the bride and groom would like while their guests watch! Not only is the painting itself a keepsake for the couple to cherish forever, it is also an added layer of unforgettable entertainment for their closest friends and family to witness.
To be invited to participate in weddings is an incredible honor that I don’t take lightly. It is the best day of my couple’s lives and the fact they allow me to be a part of it is so special to me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me, is that it’s something that I have always loved to do since I was little and the fact that I can now make a living doing it is extremely gratifying. Each painting I create has so much of my heart and soul poured into it because it’s not only a job, it’s a passion. Having loyal clients that commission paintings (sometimes multiple) and couples that choose to hire me for the best day of their lives just validates everything that I’ve worked so hard for.
I actually graduated from college with a Fine Art degree not thinking I would actually use it due to being told time and time again, “Art is a very difficult field to be successful in.” I subscribed to the notion that, It doesn’t matter what your major is, as long as you have a degree. I thought I would end up doing something completely unrelated but at least I’d have that piece of paper and experience in something I could enjoy in the meantime. I can proudly say now I am a successful, working artist.
It always makes me laugh when I’m painting a wedding and a guest comes up to me and asks, “Are you a friend of the couple?” Even though it starts out as purely a business relationship, I can honestly say that I have not painted a single couple that I couldn’t see myself being friends with. I seriously adore them all.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As I mentioned previously, the majority of people I talked to while in school made it seem like having an actual sustainable career as an artist was near impossible. I think the major misconception is that it seems more like a hobby and not something as necessary as say healthcare or teaching. But the thing is, art sparks joy and emotion. It helps us articulate our thoughts and ideas. It shows us new perspectives and gives an outlet for us to be creative. It brings us together.
Guests will often ask me if this is my full time job and I am always so happy to answer, “yes.” Everyone always seems so blown away by that response. It’s not always easy, but making a living as an artist IS possible. You just have to work for it and not give up. Taking risks like I did can help you find your niche and once you have that, you can really hone in and perfect your craft.
