We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tifarah Naava a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tifarah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
You, You, and Yourself is the most powerful and meaningful project you will and can work on. I have curated stories, mistakes, lessons, enlightenment, and so much more.
I wanted to reconnect to my sense of purpose, creativity, and confidence. My interest was so diverse, that I didn’t know what path to focus on when I graduated high school. To be honest, I was envious of those around me who had a clear idea of what they wanted their career to be or do in life because they were working on it. I felt sometimes I was just wondering. Why did I have such strong desires for so many things? But, life finds a way to bring things full circle. It turned out that all those aspirations led me to acquire different skill sets, insights, and vital lessons that I use to this day. I wouldn’t trade it for the world now. Even thou, I battle with mental health, confidence, and valuing my worth, it is so rewarding to see what I have done thus far. I know without a doubt this is only the beginning!
Unleashing who I am and continuing to become is a true journey. Having a firm sense of self is priceless. I have discovered who Tifarah Naava is and what her essence is made up of, I can Be, Know and Live. Fearlessly, I want to continue to evolve in all fibers of my being. Producing, creating, collaborating and my traditional artwork are now done with intentions. I don’t choose projects just for money or to have something to add to my resume. It’s about the missions, purpose, and who will truly benefit. Equality on all levels of the human experience on this earth is most important. This all comes from my own experience in life. Therefore, staying true to myself, the vision, and plan is the project that means the most to me.
Tifarah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a creative director, producer, writer, actress, and artist. Over the years, I have developed a strong passion for producing purposeful, fun, creative, and authentic content. I had a natural affinity for the creative arts, which has led to different facets; such as interior design, wardrobe styling, art directing, and graphic design. I started in theater in elementary school until I was in college. I worked as a kitchen a bath designer as well. The expertise I have acquired is valuable for production work.
With each client and project, my artistic and leadership instincts have propelled me to levels of personal success. I honed my craft in the field being hands-on at every step, asking questions when needed, and giving perspective. After graduating with degrees in Graphic Design Multimedia and Business Administration and Management in General, I believe in the power of teamwork, flexibility, and preparation. I worked in various capacities on different sets to expand my knowledge of filmmaking. With time spent in the theater, print modeling, and then working as an extra for three years in my free time, I gained a true insight into what the day players experience on set in Atlanta. After fifteen years, I aspire to showcase stories that reveal the common human threads of life. My goal is to remove the stereotypes, broaden the narratives, and provide equality for women and minorities in all functions of the entertainment industry.
I am proud of this adventure so far. As well, as all the yes(s), no(s), maybe(s), should’ve, could’ve, etc.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Earlier in my creative journey, I wish I focused on the grants and services our community did provide. I also wish I had the credence to start my production company earlier. However, the most amazing thing in life is it’s never too late. If you are still alive then it is still possible. So go for it. Just do it! Take full advantage of the resources and services the government and community do offer minorities and women. Receive constructive criticism as a tool to make yourself greater. Understand your strengths and weaknesses then adjust accordingly when it comes to your craft or career. And last but not least. Teamwork truly makes the Dream real. Find a mentor and find your like-minded tribe to make it happen. There is no such thing as knowing everything. Take classes, read books, shadow people in your field, volunteer, etc.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There are many times I had to pivot along this journey. Some were easier than others. I pray and meditate a lot. I ask for my higher power aka infinite intelligence to guide me, bring me to or bring forth all that is needed for me to see a personal desire or any objective to completion. It is then up to me to stay committed. Most times the best things happen outside of your comfort zone. I know you have heard this cliche before but it has been my truth. If there is a will, then there is a way. And your way is not the only way. Year after year, new opportunities and paths are created for you to achieve anything you set your mind to. Become life water. Be flexible.
Self-evaluation is a major key as well. You have to be willing to hear constructive criticism about yourself. Even if it’s from someone you claim you don’t respect or value. Why do you say that?… because through their perspective they might have insight into you and what you are doing wrong. We are often blind to our pitfalls and vices that do us more harm than good. You don’t have to let them know but consider their viewpoint. PRIDE often comes before the fall. Most of the time, we are our own worst enemy. Also, getting rid of people, places, and things that no longer serve you. Even when you have envisioned them or that thing as a part of your journey… just let it go. There is always something far greater waiting around the corner. Usually, all these things will require you to pivot.
However, I will say this. Never! Ever! … let a pivot devalue who you are, your moral compass, and your belief. As long as it doesn’t harm a living thing or place… pivot when necessary!
