We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiesheedah Phillips a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tiesheedah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
My father was one of my biggest supporters in everything I put my mind too. I guess you can say I am the true definition of a “daddy’s girl”. In 2021, I lost him along with an aunt, two uncles and a cousin to Covid. With their passing, I felt as though I needed an outlet, something that would be able to pull me out of a depressing time. This is when I found my esthetics program.
From the first day, I knew this was not going to be an easy task. In the midst of losing half of my family, I was also a mother to a 3 year old boy at the time, as well as a full time employee. My school of choice was also an hour away from my home. I had prior obligations that were priority for me but I knew that being in the dark space I was, my dreams would not fulfill themselves. This is when I decided to take that leap of faith, I decided that I was going to school to become an esthetician.
Monday – Friday, 5pm-10pm, this was my schedule for 9 months. Within those 9 months I learned a lot about who I am as a person and how much of a risk I was taking by following my dreams. Not only was I learning basic esthetics, waxing and beauty, I was creating a new life for myself and family though this process. I was becoming the business woman that I’ve always wanted to be before my own eyes. It was at that moment that I realized you really can be anything in this world if you put you mind to it and trust God’s plan for you.
Today, I am still that hard working mother, working full time but I’ve also been able to commit myself to my business in esthetics, Face It Facial Studio LLC. I would not have my studio if it wasn’t for taking the risk and believing in myself.
Tiesheedah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name Is Tiesheedah, I am from Connecticut and I am a licensed esthetician. I became and esthetician in May of 2022, shortly after I opened my own business/studio call Face It Facial Studio LLC. I am a solo esthetician practicing facials, facial massage and body waxing. I love interacting with my guests when they come into visit. Whether a new guests or reoccurring, the feedback from people is what keeps me going.b
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was not everyone you expect to cheer for you is going to cheer for you. Thats ok!
Most of my adolescent and teenage years I was a cheerleader. My job was to uplift people’s spiritus and make them feel good about what they were doing. Naturally, I assumed that it would be the same in return, it was NOT. As soon as I opened my business, I received more praises from people a didn’t know and nothing from the people I expected. Maybe a share or two, a service here or there.
Most of the cheering came and still comes from people I’m meeting for the first time in my chair. Although it feels a little discouraging at first, it does not stay this way. By staying consistent and perfecting your craft, you will find that even though you may not know someone, they are rooting for you BIG TIME.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
To be completely honest, I do not have a story. I funded and still fund my business solely by myself today. While I am able to maintain some expenses through what my business brings in, I am still working on building capital.
Sometimes it does get very discouraging but I always keep in mind that this is a plan God and I worked out together. As long as I stay determined I will be able to build what I need
