We recently connected with Tiesha Bryant and have shared our conversation below.
Tiesha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I started We Have a Purpose as a non profit organization in November 2014, because I had a desire to see young people succeed, regardless of their circumstances, regardless of many obstacles or the hurdles they may have to overcome, as I did. Becoming a teen mom at 13, growing up in an area that lacked opportunities and seeing the lack of support for justice impacted youth and the increasing number of youth entering the school to prison pipeline. I saw a way that my own life experience, education and passion could help with the trauma, poverty and hardships in life many face with no help in these systems, as I experienced. I desired to address the disproportionate rate of youth of color that this systemic issue affects. I had to make happen what wasn’t present for me, make happen for others in similar situations. With my degree I could have easily went into a for profit business. And, that will be a part of the story of We Have a Purpose at some point. However, for now this is the journey, to give to youth what was non existent during my journey. To ensure they see and feel supported, To help them to know, by living proof and example that you can have life on the other side of your struggle, your pain, your trauma.
In February 2020 I was involved in a car accident that left me emotionally stressed. I would have panic attacks and experience nervousness when driving. December of 2019 I began my full time entrepreneurship journey so I didn’t have medical insurance to see a therapist. Therefore, I used all of the tools I’ve given previous clients in similar situations for myself. I overcame being emotionally distressed after my car crash. Fast forward June 2021, I became a Licensed Master Social Worker and August 2021 Resilient Family Wellness was born. We specialize in emotional distress and parent coaching. Individuals who have been involved in car accidents are referred from their personal injury attorney to receive coaching after the crash. As a teen parent and social worker it was difficult finding parenting curriculums and programs that focused on the PARENT in parenting, so I created one. Our signature parenting program is F Dem Kidz, where the F stands for Foundation, Freedom, and focus.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Resilience Over Regret- Tiesha was faced with many unfortunate situations growing up. She was molested early in life, became pregnant at 13, her parents divorced, and she experienced homelessness all before turning 18. She managed to graduate high school. Unfortunately, she was kicked out of college. Tiesha experienced many heartbreaks from “situationships” while searching for love. However, she never gave up on love. It was her relationship with God and the support of her family that kept her. Tiesha chose to be resilient instead of regretting the situations she was faced with in life.

I am a proud wife and mom. I am most proud of my growth, despite my upbringing in the rural town of Pittsview, Alabama, a place that lacked opportunities and advancement.
I don’ take any of my struggles or successes for granted, I call it an honor and privilege.
I trust God every step of the way and truly believe anyone can exceed in life with hard work and determination.
Achieving success is not always easy, but hard work and determination is mandatory.”
Being a teen mom didn’t define me, God did!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Statistics predicted I would be a high school dropout due to becoming pregnant at 13. According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, only 38 percent of girls who had a baby before 18 have high school diplomas. I graduated in the top ten percent of my high school class. I continued my education receiving a bachelors and master’s degree in social work. I am currently a Licensed Master Social Worker, Therapeutic Life Coach, international speaker and 2x self published author, and business owner.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
You are not your child’s friend. Growing up I would hear this, to be honest I still hear it today. However, I beg to differ. As a parent I am my child’s first friend. I have to demonstrate the qualities of a friend to her. I strive to be a real model to her and not a role model. Of course there’s a line called boundaries that’s established in our relationship.
