We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tierra Shelton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tierra below.
Alright, Tierra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The beauty industry is a suppose to be a safe place for the human nature. I wanted to create a non judgmental space for women and men while they receive services within in my business. I am also a huge advocate for mental health awareness so why not mix the two together? Some people do not have a confidante or a close friend to talk to, or let alone have a place where they can decompress.
Tierra , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is TIERRA SHELTON. I am LITERALLY the Jill of all trades. I am a published model, published makeup artist, content creator, gluten free food blogger, and owner of Mobb Beauty Studio located in Birmingham, AL. I have always had a love for fashion and beauty: then came along my love for traveling and food blogging.I love getting dressed up, I love putting on makeup, I love stepping out and showing off my personality. Overall, I am an artistic person. I want to be a green apple in a room full of red apples. I was born to stand out.
As far as my beauty business, I specialize in lash extensions, makeup, permanent cosmetic makeup, body sculpting, and the list is growing. I started off as a makeup artist then ventured off into other areas of niche within the beauty industry. As stated before, my main mission was to create a safe space for my clientele. Usually, when you go to a beauty establishment, the energy is negative, or the beauty professional is gossiping about other people, etc. I did not want that for my brand. I want my tribe to come, relax, and feel carefree.
I have been pretty active in the social scene since college. (Shoutout to my alma mater Clark Atlanta University) I worked with celebrities, hair shows, fashion shows, Magic City Fashion Week here in Birmingham, and now more of my work is being published in magazines.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
November 7, 2022 is a day that changed my life. As a matter of fact, that was the day I faced DEATH. I got in a freak accident where I literally almost lost my life. Long story short, I was ran over by a pickup truck that I was using to move somethings and it rolled down the hill and it ran me over. Crazy part about it the situation is that, the truck was not on and it was still in park. I had a fractured tibia, broken femur, dislocated knee, and a 3rd degree in my inner thigh on my left leg, along with a fractured nose. I was hospitalized for two months, not being able to do a lot on my own. I am still in rehabilitation relearning how to walk. If I had to choose a mythical creature to compare myself to, it would be a phoenix. I rose from the ashes and I am still alive. The way that accident happened, I should have had way more injuries than what I left the scene with or let alone been dead. To be honest with you, I was ready to die that day.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Word of mouth and referrals have been very effective for me. My work speaks for itself. Yes I do use social media but sometimes the algorhthm is not your friend. You definitely have to strategize yourself when it comes to marketing a brand or a business.
