We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tierra Rose a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tierra, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe that it takes a lot of patience, determination, standard & self awareness to be successful. In the beginning of my journey, there were a lot of doubts and worries about wondering if I could manage my own business.
There were plenty of times where I would end up being short on products, lower my prices or give big discounts just to bring people in. I didn’t realize that I needed to set a standard for myself to own a business. My time, products, and talent are very important, just as well as my clients time and money that they spend when they come to me.
I began to bring in the right people, as well as learning how to balance product, money and time.
Patience and determination is well needed while having a business! Learning how to stay in contact with clients, reach out to them and always trying to promote what you do. Some times it feels like a lot, but after 3 years, it comes more natural than ever. If I’ve learned anything, its that you should always stay determined. You cant get anywhere in life without learning how to work hard, stay consistent and to reach for your limit.
If you want something, go for it! Never let fear keep you from doing what you want to do. It may take months or even years to get there, but in the long run, its so worth it.
Imagine yourself 2 years from now. You can either still be in the same spot your in, or you can work hard towards your goal and be in a better place. Either way, time goes on. You either work hard and be ahead, or stay where you are. Your choice.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello! My name is Tierra. I am a State Board Licensed Dental Assistant and Esthetician.
Since a young age, I have always been interested in beauty, makeup and have also wanted to work in the dental field. After having my baby girl at age 20, I decided to go for it. I attended FTCC and graduated in 2017. Soon after graduating, I started working as a Ortho Dental Assistant.
In 2021, After the pandemic, I decided to start my own business doing Teeth Whitening and Tooth Gems. As a DA who loved working in the dental field, I wanted to bring something cool and unique to Lumberton, so that’s exactly what I did. After a few months, I decided I wanted to add more services. I did my research and decided to take a road to the beauty road. I attended Esthetician school, and graduated in 2022.
Fast forward to 2023, I am doing what I love to do daily, and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
At the beginning of starting my business, I started off with zero followers on Facebook/Instagram. I made my business profiles and went weeks without followers. At first, I was beginning to get discouraged. I kind of sucks when you’re expecting tons of people to view your pages, share your posts and follow you, but then you wake up the next day to no activity at all. But that’s the thing, being successful does not happen overnight. It has taken a lot of prayer, patience and consistency over the past couple years to get to where I am now. Even then, I am still working on gaining followers, new clients and views.
Having your own business means that you have to be thinking of your next move, 24/7. You should always be planning your next post, next promo or next photo.
My advice is that you should stay consistent, stay positive and work HARD.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
My best source of how to gain new clients is Facebook. I started there and have continued to grow there. I have had so many clients get my business information from FB and end up booking with me. Its a easy way for people to communicate, view your posts/photos and contact you.
