We recently connected with Tierra Ravenell and have shared our conversation below.
Tierra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
If I could go back in time I do wish that I started my business sooner. I started my business in 2020, I was working two corporate jobs and it was during COVID. I was so miserable working both of those jobs and I really wanted a way out. I remember sitting at my desk at one of the jobs thinking “this can’t be life”. I was seeing alot of small and big business closing left and right. So immediately I was second guessing myself like there’s no way i’d be able to start a business during a pandemic and afford to keep it open. Timing is everything. With the help of my income from both jobs I made the decision to step out on faith and start my business…best decision I ever made!!!

Tierra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a Licensed Esthetician, I specialize in full body waxing. I also provide other services like vajacials, lash services, and brow enhancement services. I got into this industry because i’ve always had a passion for skin care so I had to become a skincare expert! Improving the look and feel of my clients skin is my main goal. I take pride in my ability to make my clients feel good about themselves with proper skin care treatments and at home care which sets me apart from others. I really am most proud of how far i’ve come and I have to give my clients all the credit for that. Each and every single one of them holds a special place in my heart. Without all the numerous referrals they give me I would be nothing. I hope that i’ll forever be able to provide a place for them to come, be themselves, and leave looking fabulous! Aside from my waxing business, I also sell a variety of accessories. From mink eyelashes to phone cases, jewelry, sunglasses, etc. I actually started this business first and it was just an online business at first. Since then i’ve expanded to now selling these items in my suite. That business helped me become able to establish my waxing business. Thank you to every customer that has supported me along the way!

How did you build your audience on social media?
How I built my audience on social media was from posting, posting, posting. Also using certain hashtags to target specific customers/clients. I would also post my social media handles in different groups I was in so they could follow me. I also got an idea from one young lady whose podcast I would listen to where she said to airdrop your business cards/flyers when out in public. Suprisingly enough, that actually use to help get my followers up as well. I think the main thing you need to do is stay consistent with the posting and you also want to make sure your promotion/flyers look professional. You may have to invest in someone to help you if you are savy with things like that. You can also schedule posts in advance if you think you’ll forget to post or may not feel like doing it everyday. Also make sure you have brand colors and I would also suggest you try and stick to one logo.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
An effective strategy for growing clientele for me has been referrals. I offer a referral discount for any clients who refer people, no matter how many people they refer to me. People love to save money so they enjoy doing this. Also me staying up on posting on social media has been a big help and me networking with people.
