Chef Josey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

In 2018, witnessing my wife in tears over her healthcare career prompted a deep reflection on our millennial lives. I stood by her decision to leave, prioritizing her happiness above all else. Simultaneously approaching 30, I recognized the need for a significant transformation. Recalling my mother’s wisdom, “everything has a season,” I was resolute in making this particular season my own.

Having been immersed in the kitchen my whole life due to my mother’s passion for baking and cooking, it became a nonjudgmental haven for me, allowing the fluidity and creativity essential in my life. SZN embodies that same spirit, focusing on substance over appearance. Our specialty lies in Gourmet Tacos, Novelty Eggrolls, and Lemonades, a combination deeply rooted in my personal journey. Tacos symbolize the cherished Thursday tradition with my mother, where life lessons were shared. Eggrolls represent life’s unexpected depths beneath the surface. Lemonade signifies life’s challenges, emphasizing the choice to respond with sweetness despite the sour lemons thrown our way.

Have you ever had to pivot?

My initial leased kitchen, a ghost kitchen, folded unexpectedly, leaving everyone in financial distress. In a bid to adapt, especially after relocating to a new city, I scouted for a new kitchen space. Eventually, I secured a spot in a nonprofit kitchen that not only accommodated me but also allowed me to carry on with my cooking endeavors.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?

As the sole child, losing my only parent unexpectedly on Thanksgiving Day was a profound moment, all while navigating life as a plus size Black LGBTQ woman with a disability. Despite these adversities, I have grown, embraced the lessons learned, and continue to maintain a positive outlook on life.
