We were lucky to catch up with Tierra Binford recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tierra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
Many patients and other people have told me that I have the heart to so my job. Many patients have also told be that I be the best part of their day when I take their orders. Many of them come in with pain, sadness and anger. I try to make them feel as comfortable as I can. I tell them “hello”, and I tell them “to have a wonderful day” and to my surprise, they love it. It’s small things like that that makes me love what I’m doing.
Tierra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I graduated from mckendree University with a bachelor of science in health and wellness. I became a diet tech after working as a food service worker for 3 years at BJC in st louis, MO. Since then, I’ve learned about many diets and learned how to adjust many patients orders to fit into their diet plans. Which I can use as experience when I start studying to become a certified health coach.
When I become one, I plan on using my experience and what I’ve learned to make more impact on more people’s lives. Whether if it’s in a hospital setting, my own practice or in the gym setting.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back, I would choose the same thing. I always had a passion for food. I would always the food channel or food network. I would always cook food or learn how to cook particular foods. I eventually went to mckendree University and majored in health and wellness and graduated with a bachelor degree. Now I work at Barnes jewish hospital as a diet tech, where I help patients order their meals according to their prescribed diets.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
In my field, I think the most help is knowing the different types of Diets. The more you know about them, it is much easier to help the patients order their meals. You sometimes have to explain to them the rules of their Diets so they can understand them better. Some may agree, some may not agree.
