We were lucky to catch up with Tierra Anderson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tierra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Of all the things my mom did right, I would say the thing that’s impacted me most on this journey is her teaching me the importance of asking questions. She would often say, “Ask exactly what it is you don’t understand.” That taught be to not be ashamed about not having all the answers, and helped me lose pride around getting more information for myself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Under Sevyn Solutions I offer Virtual Assistant services and creative strategy sessions. I decided to start my company because in the corporate world, I’ve always worked in positions that allowed me to be of assistance to others. That experience helped me gain skills to be able to not only help people with tasks like calendar management, customer service, and social media management, but I also gained soft skills that make working with me a breeze. My goal is always to help other business owners to be able to focus on the things that matter most to them. Being able to do that by taking a few tasks off their plate is so fulfilling.
I also offer creative strategy sessions! This includes planning for photoshoots, themed events, marketing materials, etc. This came about because throughout my adult life, my community has always used me as a sounding board for their creative ideas. Whether it be asking for notes on choreography for a dance, or asking me to plan and direct a music video for their upcoming music project, they’ve asked and I light up with joy ready to help. Being creative is something I’m so passionate about. Regardless of the amount of working knowledge I have on a subject, I’ll do whatever research it takes to be able to help bring a creative vision to life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing a vision become real. My most favorite part of the process is actually seeing how a sketch or a few notes can turn into something so much bigger. The journey isn’t always unicorns and rainbows, but it’s so rewarding to see all the hard work morph into the final product. The layers of meaning and depth, the details, and the heart that artists and creatives put into their work is so beautiful. That’s what lights me up inside.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think non-creatives struggle to understand that artists and creatives can’t work the same way someone in a corporate job can. There are systems in the workplace that keep everyone on their specific track to meet the company’s bottom line. While that’s fine and good, people who are not in creative work could probably benefit from understanding that our systems might not look like theirs. Creative processes vary based on the artist and not the goal. For example, a team in a Fortune 500 company has a set process to meet a deadline and they use that process every time with minimal changes. A creative may have a process for one project, and that process could look drastically different for a project with the same criteria because we absorb and process information in a different way!
